Location: Dubach, LA | Just visited one of those barrel horse FB sites. First two ads I saw: For sale. 6 year old cow bred mare. Started in everything: roping, reining, barrels, poles. Finished in nothing for a mere 5K. Wanted. Already patterened young gelding that is ready to be hauled and finished with great bloodlines a plus. Must be withing a couple of hours from my home for less than 2K. |

Location: MD | I'm just not sure how it is that anyone can expect to find a 6 yr old with decent conformation and even a medcover pedigree that is finished in anything for $5,000. |

| Maybe they forgot to add the trade part? That would equal a $7000 horse? |

Location: Central Montana | You can wish all you want. Good horses for fair money are out there but you have to look for them. If anyone has a unicorn with rainbow mane and tail I'd like to see it.
I guess I don't know what you are expecting for what price?
A well broke horse with a decent set of papers is going to be hard to find for cheap. Most people are not trainers and it costs a lot of $$ to get one even on the ground and send it off to get it really, truly broke.
The reining trainer I've sent to is $800/month. The local trainer who starts colts is excellent at it - they come back with no buck or silliness and hours under saddle and hours of being tied saddled to be ready when they are needed - but she does almost zero ground work, they get ridden on a cow/calf operation so they get lots of outside riding but are not taught headset, to give, to pick up leads, etc. and she is $600/month.
I had my mare listed for sale here a while back, she is kind of like the first horse listed, started in several things but not finished in anything except for being well broke, sound, and seasoned to being on the road.
I still have her and continue to ride her and haven't relisted her for sale. She is not going to make the cut for a reiner but I sent her off for reining training. It took 60 days to evaluate and tell she wasn't going to be the level I was looking for. What I had her listed for is a fraction of I have into her.

Location: Dubach, LA | This one is great! Seven year old mare, just broke, not patterened for a mere $4500. Where do people come up with these prices? |

It all depends on the pedigree, I have paid that and over that for prospects, even broodmare prospects.
For the 6 yr old, I would say that is cheap for an all around prospect, also depends on what her bloodlines are, if she is a high brow cat or peptoboonsmal, that is a very good deal.
