Location: mi | It just so happens that I just asked my vet about a supplement to help my horse with a fractured Pastern. I did not add in the Equi bone as I have used that before on a navicular horse with no visible help so was going a different route. I asked her about the Osteon verses Duraplex by Kentucky Equine Research. This was her response.
We do not have any personal experience with these products but I called the KER company and spoke with them about Duraplex. They made that supplement for racehorses going into training and being stalled continually. It is proven that horses that are stalled will loose bone density to some extent and their supplement gives extra minerals and vitamins to help counteract that and help with bone repair. They didn't study it in fracture cases but they think that it will help that bone reform. But that being said is it going to shorten his stall confinement and obviously speed the recovery? That is hard to say. There is a quote on their website from Dr. Duncan Peters (well respected Sports Medicine veterinarian) about how he always puts his post-surgical patients on it. The platinum product only contains silicon to help with bone and cartilage so comparing the products the Duraplex gives you Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and zinc plus some vitamins which are essential for bone, ligaments and tendons. So I'd say you'd get more for your money with the Duraplex. |
