What do you think? Will he be Triple Crown Champion this Saturday? Personally I hope so and think he has the ability.

I hope so too.

I also heard that Sketchers is sponsoring him for the race & will have their logo all over him this weekend so I hope that doesn't jinx him.

I'll be rooting for him like I have been the last 2 races.  His jockey was on GMA this morning.  He looked hilarious next to Michael Strahan but sure seems like a neat guy.  Michael asked him if he got nervous before he ran and he said, "I do sometimes but not with California Chrome, he's cool".

I certainly hope he can do it.

Personally, based on his performances in the KD and PS, I'd say it's certainly possible. I don't feel he was even asked to fully give it his all in those races, so with this one being more gruelling, I feel that he has enough to give.

You have some serious willpower lol. I missed the first two as well because I was at a barrel race but I can't miss this race. I know history is going to be made and I want to watch it in real time not replay!

Yea, he's going to win and Curly will run second.  There is nothing else in the field that can outrun these two.  Everyone on the backside knows Chrome will win.  My husband says Chrome has a foot pedal.  Only the armchair handicappers and analysts who have to fill T.V. time are saying others have a shot.  It will be the Chrome-Curly show again.  My husband said Chrome had an awesome work the other day.  He said the horse is getting faster.  By the way, Curly is only 15-2 but has a HUGE heart.  You can throw a ton of dirt in his face and bump the hell out of him, he just keeps coming.  I love Curly.

I hope he wins. It will be amazing if he does. We were actually trying to figure out what time we want to get to Belmont yesterday. the tickets are for 930 am but dont know if we want to be there all day. Will be betting on him even if its $2 bet. If I get any good pics, I will post them. (friend and i are bringing our good cameras but its going to be crowded!!)

Chrome will win because of who he is.  You can't create a horse like this with product or whatever.  He's kind of a freak like Secretariat but you know what I'm saying?  Not Flair or any product can take credit for what this horse is about to do.  They could have put a Hello Kitty bandaid on his nose and he would still win.  He was just born to do it.

What is interesting is after all the effort and money spent on the perfect pairings of sire and dam, the genetic analysis, the supplements, drugs and training methods, some pretty old records still stand today.   In humans the olympic records are shattered each year.  But, Man o' war and secretariat still hold their own.

I think he has a great shot, then I will have to eat my words because last year I said a triple crown winner will never happen again as long as there are 20 horses in the Derby. The best horse doesn't always win the Derby because of too many horses. But this year the best horse won the Derby and the Preakness.  Both races Chrome was going away and made it look too easy. I have no doubts he can go 1 1/2 mile no problem.

I think he can do it!!!..just read this.
Fernando takes it all the way back to the lineage of Betty Derr – the previously mentioned "blue-hen mare" who was born in 1928 and begat a long line of girl power in the breeding shed and on the race track. Fernando and Roman made a big deal out of the fact that a former champion juvenile filly named Numbered Account is present in two places in Love the Chase's bloodlines – making her "intensely inbred" in the pedigree nomenclature. Numbered Account was one tough mother on the track and as a dam, producing plenty of runners with notable stamina.

And that is a key: If you want to win classic races of longer distances like the Derby (1¼ miles), the Preakness (1 3/16) and the Belmont (1½), your horse generally must be bred for staying power.

"There is a reinforcement of stamina from Numbered Account," Roman said. "There's a hell of a lot of stamina within the dam to indicate why he's doing what he's doing at classic distances."

Exercise rider Willie Delgado plays with California Chrome. (AP)
Lucky Pulpit brings some rich blood to the equation as well. His granddad was A.P. Indy, the 1992 Horse of the Year who may have won the Derby that year if not scratched because of a minor injury the day of the race. He has sired a succession of studs. A.P. Indy's father was Seattle Slew, winner of the 1977 Triple Crown. And the immortal Secretariat is one more generation back in the ancestry.

"It's like a Who's Who," Fernando said. "Heavy stamina sires stacked on top of each other."

But the underappreciated link on that side may be California Chrome's grandsire, Pulpit. Although deceased for two years, Pulpit's progeny are proving to be prolific sires in their own right. Tapit is the leading North American sire in terms of 2014 earnings, at $5.7 million. Lucky Pulpit is third at $3.7 million – nearly all of which has been earned by California Chrome.

By winter, California Chrome's success had led to Lucky Pulpit's stud fee quadrupling to $10,000 – and that was before Chrome won the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness in breathtaking fashion. By the next mating season, his fee will have risen some more.

And if California Chrome becomes the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years, his slow mom and short-winded dad will improbably be the premier power couple in thoroughbred breeding. Those laggardly finishes in cheap races at offbeat tracks will be ancient history for newfound breeding royalty.

whether he wins it or not, I think he's changed the attitude towards racing. This is the first time in a long time where I can remember people saying they actually believe a triple crown winner can happen again. I am totally cheering for him and I believe he can do it!

run n rate - 2014-06-03 11:32 AM I pray he does and the worst part is I cannot watch it, I didn't get to watch the first two races so I'm refusing to watch this one too. Makes me sad that I will miss History being made in the moment but I'm superstitious that way...

Well after the race is over you can come to my house I have the first two races recorded.

Sweet!!!
I didnt' mean to miss the Derby, it just happened that way so then I HAD to miss the Preakness on purpose. When Smarty Jones won the Derby and the Preakness I missed the Belmont because the damn cows wouldn't travel down the trail, they just kept going in circles...I know to this day he lost because I was looking at the backside of about 800 stupid mother cows who couldnt' find their babies and head to greener pastures.

Lol!  I understand how that happens.  I had to be gone for the Derby so that is why I recorded it.  But just know you have an invite any time.

Kcaughran - 2014-06-03 1:48 PM I think he can do it!!!..just read this. "There's a hell of a lot of stamina within the dam to indicate why he's doing what he's doing at classic distances." .. View gallery . Exercise rider Willie Delgado plays with California Chrome. (AP) Lucky Pulpit brings some rich blood to the equation as well. "Heavy stamina sires stacked on top of each other." But the underappreciated link on that side may be California Chrome's grandsire, Pulpit.

 This. ^^

I'm not a breeder, but IMHO while it's true that proven sire to proven dam SHOULD stack the deck in favor of a superstar how many times have we seen talent skip a generation (or two).  Heck before the '73 Derby everyone who was anyone was saying Secretariat couldn't get the distance because Bold Ruler's weren't distance horses...totally ignoring the fact that his pedigree is almost nothing but distance horses.  Or how he was considered a failure as a sire because he never reproduced himself - but look at the influence he's had on the current generation.  Personally I believe it was a perfect storm - I don't think CC would have been as successful in a huge barn or under a big name trainer.  Just like some kids benefit more from one-on-one schooling, some horses benefit from being the only focus...

That sounds cool!  You bet bring them all.  Sad thing is when my stud horse died in January (my last sorrel and last horse I had) I swore I wouldn't have another horse.  Well that lasted until about 3 weeks ago.  I absolutely fell in love with a horse advertised here on BHW.  Thought I couldn't live without him.  Guess what color he is.......Bay.......but I love him!

Bob - watched an interview with Art Sherman this week...thought it was interesting that California Chrome has actually PUT ON weight during the Triple Crown trail.  I'm not sure but I don't remember hearing of any TC hopeful doing that before...a couple have maintained their weight, but the overall trend is for horses to lose some weight in that stressful environment.  If that isn't a testimonial for the MM I don't know what is...

Are you remembering Smarty Jones, Sliver Charm, Real Quiet...? Some of the few that won the first 2 legs that really looked promising for a TC winner, but then came up short in the final strides of the race?
But I'm rooting for California Chrome! I hope he will be different and have the true heart to carry on and win when put to the final test in that last 100 yards.

He'll do it because he was born to do it.  My husband has watched his works and said he'll win.  Curly will be right there in the stretch.  Both horses are peaking now.  If Curly should win, Tracy is sending us a win pic.  I'm hoping to see them at Breeder's Cup.  Both horses have great connections.
