| Lucky Pulpit though well bred, never won a race of consequence in 22 career starts and stood for a $2,500 stud fee.
His dam raced for an $8,000 price tag, and the dam’s dam was just as cheap. (The experts do say that the pedigree would look a lot better if Lucky Pulpit sired more Grade I stakes winners, proving that his son is not a genetic fluke.)
If better mares had been bred to him, he likely would have sired Grade 1 winners. Then he wouldn't be a "cheap" stud. Now better mares will be bred to LP and it will be interesting to see what happens. Breeding is a crap shoot! |

Location: Where I am happiest | Actually, Lucky Pulpit has been a very successfull sire in California and his book sure does not read like a who's who of racing dams. He has been bred to the lesser mares, and yet, is a leading sire in Ca and with not alot of runers. The numbers crunch very high for him on percentages of total foals, to runners, to winners and out of not so good mares. Also, Beyer is failing to mention Lucky Pulpits lack of high end prowess on the track was due to a breathing problem.
C.C's dam also had breathing issues that was discovered at the end of her short career.She would panic pre-race and it was due to her physical lung maladie.

| Sunday Silence won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Breeders' Cup Classic, was second in the Belmont and ended up standing his entire stud career in Japan as few people in the U.S. were interested in breeding to him. In Japan he was a sensational sire as well as sire of sires. Hopefully the TB industry will not let CC go the way of SS.

| Ive read quite a few TB greats have failed at stud. so what does that say, they have the bloodlines but dont have the production. Maybe CC will have the production and becomes his own famous bloodline in 100 years from now. All the greats started somewhere. |

| If we want to pull stud facts, I beleive Secretariat was a lousy colt sire. His mares turned out some nice horses, but overall he was a dud for direct get. |

Exactly. People keep saying that he is defying the odds because he wasn't bred from greats. Well, actually, he was. His lineage is not shabby at all. People just love a good underdog story. |
