Will a young inexperienced stud try to mate when the mare is not in heat? I know some mares will fight back but what if the mare doesn't? Will he still try?

Yes.   Actually was getting mares checked this week at the vet and a stallion came in for x rays because a mare NOT in heat kicked him while he was trying to mount her ... So yes, some will try.

Our stallion was pasture bred and hand bred before we got him so he has a ridiculous set of GREAT manners - not only to his handler but to the mares.   As my vet says ... they are smart ... sometimes TOO smart.

I was always told a stallion wouldn't cover a mare that wasnt close to ovulation (and I always laughed ... like right -- WHAT MAN do you know would say "No, sorry - you're not ready -- maybe tomorrow" as the mare is backing up peeing on him ... because I dont know many)  But we have learned this IS true ... At least for those studs that have a lot of experience with pasture/hand breeding - being even more so the case.   Thought that was interesting ... Asked my vet about it and she said It dang sure is true!!!!
