Which do you like to use for getting a young horse to collect. This horse already has a natural low head set but needs help staying collected.

Draw reins, I set them high unless I have a horse that's super high headed

I would suggest a German martingale unless you feel confident working draw reins.

I use a running martingale but make my own so I'm not stuck on a set length between the center and the rings the reins go through. I'll try to find a picture and post it if you're interested.

None of the above.  I personally prefer to teach a youngster head set and collection without the aids.  Just personal opinion.  I don't claim to be a trainer though.

I agree with this - though I have used all three. You can feel the horse better with no aids and that way you know exactly how much pressure you're applying to his mouth.

Collection comes from behind.  The training tools you mention can be valuable tools, but a young horse needs to learn to shift its balance and weight bearing to the rear and not be heavy on the forhand.  Once this is achieved, collection and a flexed/relaxed head set will follow.  You will also see how the horse will learn to break over at the poll and me truly collected rather than the crest of the neck being thr highest point (false collection and flexion).

It will take more time to get what you are looking for by not using draw reins or artingales, but the effects will last longer and impact the horse's overall performance and rideability in a positive way.

I feel like I'm already in his mouth too much trying to get him to stay broken at the poll (like I said before his head/neck set is already low) while still squeezing him to keep driving his butt up under him. Any advice for this without using an aid, bc I have used them all but would prefer not to.

Pick your hands up hold until he gives and let go. People make the mistake hold the reins and also hold hands low.

I use german martingales and draw reins after my colts already break at the poll. I too set my draw reins high.

Your seat, legs and impulsion!!! When I ride my seat controls most of my horse, I suggest taking some lessons from a good coach as they may see something on the ground that you don't notice riding
