That pretty new yearling I picked up... cleared an elk fence today. The top portion rolled down and she scaled about 4.5' into the adjoining pasture with only a few minor scratches on her one hind leg. When we brought her into the other pasture 4.5' three rail, we put another horse in with her. She jumped out of that one too and ran down to the barn.
We have her stalled now with my other yearling and when we take him out of the stall to stretch she literally climbs the wall... CLIMBS.
I need a birdcage! How do you hold a horse like this in? She is an amazing athlete but that's no good if she's also an escape artist!

A strip of electric tape on the inside of the fence may help. I know it did with my houdini! I set it up about a foot before the actual fencing with cheap step in fiberglass posts from tsc.

I second electric fence maybe even a couple of strands. My sister's yearling was on the other side of the fence from my gelding and hit the electric fence with her nose one night, that was all it took to keep her way off the fences now. 4.5 feet isn't really all that tall for a fence.

Mine sure didn't. Ended up jumping out of my pasture, went to neighbors and jumped their barbed wire fence ( I dont have any barbed wire on my place for this reason)... ended up catching his rear leg on the top strand and it caused a lot of damage. I would nip this problem in the butt before the colt gets himself into trouble.

We are moved to our new property right now, but have not pulled power to the new house yet so we can't turn on the electrical fencing, otherwise I would... but I don't think it would stop her either way.
Today she is learning the meaning of the patience post in the round pen and will be turned out with my big mares and hopefully that will keep her distracted. There are no fences higher than the elk fence and if she can clear that...well :/

You said your fencing is 4.5 but Elk fencing is usually over 6' high (6 foot 3 inches if I remember correctly). Could you not invest in a solar charger for the time being? Im not sure how much a patience poll is going to help a yearling who is jumping fences but hopefully a larger herd will help keep him entertained.

I had a friend who had a jumper and they lined the inside of the paddock with electric tape not on the fence but before she could get to the fence and it was solared powered. It worked that and the patience pole helped. THe patience pole taught her it was ok to be alone.

I meant she folded the top half of the elk fencing down, pulled the staples and fence off the top half but the bottom 4.5' was still securely stapled in.

I bought a 3 year old that was a jumper if he was alone. Jumped 5' fence twice and I know one of those was flat footed because it was a small pen (jumped clean). He grew out of it and I left him out with other horses in the meantime.
