 Am I really the Weirdo?

Location: Kansas | Some of you have followed Clifford's career since I got him in November 2012, and I'm beyond thrilled to say that he is now a rodeo money winner! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP5x52A1ld4&feature=youtu.be Sure it was $94 for last hole, but it totally counts. Yesterday/this morning was one of the toughest rodeos I've entered in a while. a 14.723 won it, and we were sixth with a 14.895. There were two 14.9s that went home empty handed and those were both really nice runs. I was early in slack and had to sweat out 24 more girls which was NOT FUN! LOL.
It was a super busy weekend for Cliff and he handled it all really well. He ran at a BRF qualifier jackpot in the afternoon, then we drove the 7 miles to the rodeo, hung around and killed time until the team roping slack started around 2 a.m. Pretty sure we didn't run until 2:45, and the barrels slack ended a few minutes after 3 so we got to our home away from home at 4:10 a.m. UGH. Then shortly after 9:30 a.m. we were headed out the driveway to another jackpot on my way home. They got a good turnout, so I went ahead and entered him because it was a tiny pen and we need to get better in those setups. Despite not getting much of a warmup, he got third out of about 50 so I was really pleased. He should be tired now, but when I came in an hour ago, he had been running laps with Chance. goobers! |

Thanks! I got way more excited than $94 deserves but my last rodeo check on any horse was back in August and I think I forgot what it felt like to wait for money after a rodeo. LOL.
Aw heck, 1L2R, you just say that cause he's a lefty. LOL. (BUT......I do think he's the most talented of the 3. He's definitely the hardest to ride.) |

LOL. That pen is set up much better for a lefty IMO. I like to give them more room going to the first barrel and the alley is off centered so a lot of times people going right cut their pocket off badly. It's just kind of an awkward approach and you have to handle it like you would a 13-second racetrack pen. |

Location: Kansas | Itsme - 2014-06-08 10:45 PM NICE!!! Is that the horse people told you to retire.... Thanks!! No, my gray is the one who has had a rotten time lately. We did more diagnostic work and injected coffin joints a month ago. So far, he's acting more like his old self and he's clocked well the few runs we've made. The gray has not trusted this arena's ground in a while and I could tell loping circles before the rodeo that he didn't like how it felt so I stuck to my plan and ran Cliff. Luckily Cliff loves Lone Wolf.

Thank you. Quite honestly, he still scares me most of the time. I don't think the video shows quite how hard he ran to the first barrel, but I was really just hoping I didn't fly off like I did at Lincoln in the bonus race! That was embarrassing to say the least. |

| Very nice run. Looked like he might have lost just a bit of time on the back side of the second or I bet you would of won it

Yeah, I didn't see anyone else that placed have a bobble so he definitely made up for it on the straightaways. There was a 14.99 that was absolutely flawless and I'm stunned that we outran them.
I'm still trying to figure out how much to handle him back there. Matt thinks I'm asking for too big of a move and stalling him out, which I could be. I also kind of think I might be letting him shut down too early and with too big of a pocket, so he's losing momentum on the back side and having to take an extra step to get around it cleanly. Definitely open to suggestions on it though. |

I'm having a lot of trouble with that second barrel in the bigger pens. Smaller pen, I don't have time to screw up our approach LOL. Probably because we have hit second a lot, I worry about it and try to hold him off, which of course is the exact wrong thing to do. He made up his time running to the first and around it I think. Any time I can finish a clean run still in the saddle, I'm happy because I feel like a monkey riding a football on him. |

I totally know where you are coming from. Bunny left me at the third when I first got her and I went behind the cantle. I think rubber bands saved me, LOL |

Rubber bands didn't save me at Lincoln. He smoked the first like Saturday night but I had to pick my foot up to miss the barrel and I wound up behind the cantle with only one stirrup. I needed a seat belt that day so I came home and started doing ab workouts LOL. Every time I am struggling I tell myself I have to get through the situps & stuff so I can not fall off Cliff again! |

| Woohoo! Congrats! I'm having the same thing at second right now. Just need to have less pocket and wait another stride to get all the way around it. Feels. Like. Forever. I had my ah! ha! moment this week during practice, now to cultivate that...... Happy Clifford was a rock star last weekend!! |

Thanks!!! It does feel like forever trying to get to the right spot at the second. We're doing really well at it in the outdoor pens when he's just RUNNING but indoors he gets pretty setty and I have to ride him a completely different way. That presents its own set of challenges. In the little barn we ran in the two jackpots, he SMOKED first & second because there wasn't time to wander away from our spot at second. I think he's going to be my little pen horse, which is super exciting because I've never had one of those! |

Thanks. He does all the hard work and I mainly just hang on and try not to scream! Some days I think I don't ride him very well! (OK most days....) As he gets more consistent with not running off on the back side of second (which he was doing because we weren't deep enough for him to turn without the barrel in front of his chest), I'll be able to trust him more and not GRAB back there. So maybe next year I will have a video of me doing it right LOL. |
