Location: IL | So was flipping through my new NRS catalog and came upon the tiedown section. I noticed the new Martin headsetters, one is adjustable. They seem to contact the poll first but also have small noseband on them. In what instance would you choose one of those? Would they have a bit of the same effect as a bonnet tiedown? Or do they kind of give you the best of both worlds sorta speak by combining a bonnet & noseband? I'm intrigued by them & why one would choose to use one. Are they simply for "headset?"
Thoughts?

Location: USA | The noseband reacts first to keep the nose in and if they lift their head to avoid the noseband then the poll pressure kicks in. Helps keep the head down. They actually have 2 kinds, one is solid rope and the other on is rope over the noseband and poll and adjustable leather straps running down the cheeks. I have the solid rope one, it worked for the horse that needed some help.

| I have both, and like them. I use them every day. I am riding colts and horses that need tuning. I do not like to use a tie down that a horse can push on, that defeats the purpose IMO. On a finished horse, I don't always use one during a competition run, but I use them at home. The adjustable one will be stiff and fit funky at first until it starts to conform to the horses head. I like it because I am using it on multiple horses a day and can adjust it as needed. |

Yep! Thats the one I was referring to and there's another just like it except it has a leather strap so you can adjust it. :) So would you use one instead of a noseband tie down or bonnet? What would make decide a horse could or would benefit from one of these? |

Location: Weatherford, Texas | That is all I use. I get the ones that have the nose on a loop so it can move around. That way I get poll and then if they decide to get a little too crazy with their nose it will hit them and bring it back- but otherwise it is not in contact. With these I leave the tiedown strap a little long so it they don't hit it unless they are being too extreme or naughty.
I have a deathly fear of a horse coming unwound and throwing their nose up in the air- IMO that is the biggest way to get hurt and most common way that time is lost in a run. I like them to have their nose to move around but there is a limit.
I use them on everything from colts to finished rodeo horses. LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!! |

Ok! I wanted to verify before I gave my experience.
I used one on my gelding for a few seasons quite a few years back. I was younger, I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but he had a rearing issue. Wasnt pain, was just attitude. I made sure he wore it without me on him the first time. He popped up, hit that, came right back down. Defiantly did the trick. I used it for a while after while seasoning him mostly as a 'security blanket' and eventually took it off completely.
And honestly I have never used it agian. If I was to now, it would probably be for a horse who occasionally liked to pop its head up out of attitude. |

Location: Texas | I use this kind of tiedown on my mare Bunny. I like the sliding action on the nose and it fits better than a traditional tiedown. I don't like the Martin brand however. I think I found mine on rods.com or some other site. The Martin one I have didn't fit her head right. |

Location: IL | Thanks so much for the replies and explanations. I'm wondering if this would be beneficial for my OTTB mare. She's usually an angel to ride but occasionally will get a burr up her hiney (or if something spooks her) she'll toss her nose up and of course I have no control when she does that. I've been using a plain leather noseband on her right now with the tie down strap adjusted as loose as it can be safely. However she doesn't seem to work as well in it as I had hoped. |

| I actually prefer this type over others. As others have mentioned, it has some give & take... allows your horse some benefit of the doubt but also catches them when i needs to and released again. They cant comfortablly lay on them like the original tie-down.
ETA I threw this on my current gelding (who doesnt normally ever need a tie down) but he was flipping his nose around his turns when he got stuck in heavy ground... I kept it lose enough where it only effected him when he flipped his nose. Few rides in it and havent had that problem since.

Awesome! I love the idea of the give and take with this style!
Judging by everyone's experience with this style, I'm thinking it might be worth a try!

Location: Texas | This is the one I prefer. The way it's tied to the ring where the tiedown strap clips makes it fit alot more stable in my opinion. http://www.smithbrothers.com/rope-headset/p/X3-12166/
See how the Martin has a different ring?? I have the plain solid rope Martin one and it didn't work like the top one. This adjustable one might have fixed the problem http://www.nrsworld.com/martin-saddlery/martin-adjustable-headsetter-rope-nose-114341?gclid=CMrxl-zo8L4CFY_m7AodeF8Ajg |

Yep I bought the Martin one and immediately when I put it on it did not fit it all like the old rope head setter I had. The rope bowed out on one side and the nose didnt stay in place. I don't even know where that one is in my barn anymore LOL |

Location: MD | I have used this tie down on horses off and on for many years. I like them in the situations that others have already posted. Actually, will be running one that I currently am hauling in one for his next few runs. |
