Location: In My Own Dream Land | Hi All. Im looking for some help and any adivce you'd be willing to share. I was recently given (as a gift) a 15 yr old gelding. He is finished, own son of Dr nick Bar. From what I was told, he was HS rodeoed, then got turned out for 5 years and not even caught. My MIL got him and had him about a month. He was very underweight. SHe put some weight on him and ran him at their state finals. He warmed up calm and walked in and out of arena. I'd had him 3 weeks. I've been riding him almost everyday. He is super nice at home. Put a good 50-75# on him and got his topline better, but not perfect. I took him to a barrel race a week ago, with plans of running him. I saddled him up Sat am, and as soon as I put weight in the stirrup, he blew up. So I got off and lunged him for a good 20 minutes. Got back on and he was fine. Pranced all the way to the arena (1/4 mile) and pranced 3 laps around. This was before they put barrels up for time slots. He was standing calmly by the gate, but to the right of it. I asked him to WALK out of the gate, as I wanted him to understand it was a run in/run out pen. The second I headed out, he started rearing and leaping on his hind end. I got him turned around, and he quit. I walked to my first barrel, but when I got halfway there, he just stopped and froze. I picked up my over n under and he went on. I finished my pattern and went out teh gate, while he was leaping again. He is on beet pulp, 1/2 cup of Omelene 500 and Amplify for weight, as well as full turnout. Also on THE MM w/ ucler, bleeder, and joint. He gobbles his grain up. I've never had a horse like this, and to be honest it makes me nervous to even haul him. Any suggestions on what could be going on or feed changes, supplements?

Location: Pacific Northwest | To me it sounds like he needs to be ridden more and maybe brought along slower. If he was just turned out for 5 years and then only being ridden for 2 months that might have been too much for him to just be loaded up and taken to a barrel race.
ETA I would also find out as much as you could from the previous owner. He might have had, or still have, a soreness problem that makes him anxious at barrel races.

Location: Nebraska | I'd be worried about a past (and maybe present) soreness problem. It might be why they had him turned out so long?
He sounds like a horse that was blown up and is figuring out what is being asked of him again and is refusing.

Location: In My Own Dream Land | He's been chiro'ed, teeth done and to vet. He was vetted clean. I haven't been able to track down much for history on him, as of yet.
I was seriously hoping this wasn't a case of blown up barrel, horse, because I wont deal with those. The thought has crossed my mind.
Thanks for the help. | |
