Location: Hill Country of TEXAS!! | What are some good proven drills to shorten up a stride and make their feet quicker? I know collection is it but im looking for drills. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | Anything with half-halts and lots of direction changes. I use an obstacle course with barrels, poles, cavalettis, and cones. They might have to jump 3 cavaletti on 7' centers, then gather up to move lateral left to make a right hand turn around a pole that's set to the left of the jumps, turn it, and go back across, then turn back around and snake through between the cavaletti, then do a figure 8 over a ground pole. The possibilities are endless for setting up stuff to get their feet moving and learning to use themselves correctly. And you can do it slow and relaxed or hustle through. Set things closer together for more quickness, or have clusters, so you can stretch them out between areas and they have to gather back up. Most horses like doing this stuff because it's fun and not boring. I will also use ground poles around barrels sometimes to help shorten or lengthen stride in certain spots. |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | Connie Combs has the best drill (IMO) for what you need. If you go to her website I'm pretty sure she has it posted on there. You could also Facebook her and she'll send it to you. I've got it on an old computer if you have trouble finding it. |

Location: Dubach, LA | Ya'll just reminded me of the time I found an obstacle course drill in BHN. D*mn thing almost got me thrown. Gave my good old boy the red *ss for sure. He loves running barrels, but not obstacle courses. Ya'll be careful.  |

| Why don't you just go pasture riding and circle trees, bushes, jump logs, scramble up a creek bank, dodge rocks, pass by some obstacles and do them on the way back home, race your shadow and practice rating, slowing down, turning etc etc or do anything using the same cues and hand signals you will use while riding barrels .... sure saves a horse from getting arena sour and legs them up at the same time.
Or buy you a short horse with little bitty short legs .. lol

Oh believe me, we turn and jump everything we come across, but there aren't nearly enough opportunities for that out and about where I live. The only woods are on the bayou and everything else is farm fields. My obstacle course changes--I don't stick to a diagram or do the same things every time. |
