| Hello!! Just moved to Ky 3 months ago. Am looking for a trainer for my 4yo Dash Ta Fame colt. Was told that a lady named Brandy around the Louisville area was a pretty good hand. I don't know many people around here so looking at all my options on trainers. Prefer a female. Thank you! |

If you can get Chris Coffey to train your horse then do it. If not Chris, call Marne. Janis Wagner is a great, great rider and trainer. But, she is dang hard to ride after. Chris is too though.
Really couldn't go wrong with any of them. An idea would to watch them all ride and compete and then decide which one is best suited to your riding style. I don't know if Charlie Peoples trains for the public but he would be a good one to find out about. |

Another poster brought up a good point about riding behind someone. I can't ride behind a lot of men, so I prefer trainers that are women. Janis is an incredible rider, but I don't think I can ride behind her. That's why I like Marne so much, she's had a lot of success with other people riding horses she has trained.
ETA: Marne did train Taylor Jacob's "Bo".

That's not a name I'm familiar with and I'm pretty sure I would know of any barrel trainer in that area.
If I were sending a horse to trainer it would be Marne. Partially because I am a perfectionist and what my wife calls "anal" about details. I think there is a place for everything and everything should be in it's place. And cleaned before it's put in it's place. Well, Marne is the same way. She may even be worse about it than me. I like that.
Plus, Marne is honest. If she says she will so many hours on your horse then that's how many hours it will have. She will also exhibition your horse. And she spreads the cost of hauling among the owners. Say she hauls 5 horses to show for exhibtioning. She splits the costs 5 ways. Other trainers charge a set price per mile to each owner.
Plus Marne's husbnd, Bob, is an excellent horseshoer. So your horse's feet will be well taken care of while in her care.
You get back a horse that's been well trainer by an expert but also one that's been hauled to shows with other horses and been under the lights.
Marne should hire me for her PR.

| Murphy, sent you a PM. Sounds like most of you around here really like Marne. I've seen some of the horses she rides & she is an amazing rider. I've been watching Janis up this way as well. She could ride a donkey & win....lol. Keep the info coming. :) :) |

Location: NE Texas | I think the most important thing for you, as an owner, is to evaluate your own expectations for your horse. What are your plans for your colt? How broke is he now and how long do you intend to keep him in training? What are your expectations for him once he's out of training for the duration which you have planned on keeping him?
Lots of good trainers out there that you don't read about in the BHN every month or hear their named called at the futurities. If I were wanting someone to train a horse for me to keep long term, none of those mentioned would be my choice, other than Joe Wayne. If I were trying to get a horse ready for a futurity and then sell, any of these would work. It's all dependent on what you are wanting to do with this horse next year vs long term in my opinion. |

Location: Ky | Bobby Stivers turns out some AWESOME horses.. but I don't know if he's still training for other people or not because his wife is sick right now.
Janis and Chris all have wicked awesome horses when they're done with them.. I've never had any experience with Marne, but everyone loves the horses she trains it seems like. Also try Rachel Ball, she took a friend of mines horse that hardly had any sense of direction and she just won the state 4H show for the second year in a row. They all train and all have really nice horses :) |

Location: SE Missouri | Marne's colts are BROKE and she's a hand... Even if futurities aren't your game (she rodeos also) you will have a colt that is VERY tuned up and looks awesome. Everything at their place is in great order. I've seen horse after horse that she has had her hands on for several years and I wouldn't bat an eye to send one to her. (even if they aren't futurity material, they are at least broke enough to go a different direction or grow up a little and maybe be open or rodeo horses)
Joe Wayne Heathcott is another good one Herbie mentioned. There's pockets of those guys around that I love to watch their horses work and would ride behind in a heartbeat. Heathcotts, McKinney's (Illinois), are just a couple that come to mind, etc..

Location: Kentucky | Janis Wagner! I will never understand why anyone says Janis is hard to ride behind. She trains her horses to be handled as little as possible. She does want them snappy. Now could I ride Ren? Probably not, but I know several people who have sent her colts and they are doing really well. If you want her number, I have it. |

| Joe Wayne turns out some nice horses. His kids have always placed 1d anywhere they went. I have a horse that Bobby Stivers trained, she is the definition of automatic and is extremely honest.. she is a 1d supershow horse that anyone can run in the 1d the first time they sit on her. Don't know if shes a special case or if its bobby, but if its his training id send him 20 more. |

| Thank you all for your help. I'm leaning toward either Marne or Janis. It will be this fall when I send him out. The girl named Brandy I was talking about is from Bedford, Ky. I found out she is not a trainer, she sends hers all out to be started. Thank you all. :) |

Location: Wearing a winter coat...... | Marne. I have used her for over 10 years and she will be honest-ride the hair off of them and WON'T waste your money. She and Bob are good people. Might want to talk to her before fall if you want a spot. She fills fast but don't let that bug you- she will ride and get more out of your horse than anyone I have seen. Pure talent with her! She is kind of a rockstar around our house :) |
