Location: Alabama | My colt has summer itchy allergies... only in the summer, he rubs his mane out, his tail out and his face & chest... Last year, first year I got him, it was TERRIBLE!! I started him on tri-hist this summer, it has defiantly helped & slowed it down, but were still itchy & miserable.. any ideas or supplement suggestions to help him?

| I have one with allergies during the summer - runny nose, coughing when we first start riding, whelps/hives on his skin -- he even gets a little swelling along his neck behind his ears.
I have had the best luck with certrizine (generic zyrtec). It doesn't need a prescription, I buy the tablets in bulk at Sams, crush them and mix with the feed. Costs about $10 a month.
My gelding is about 1000 lbs, I give him 100 mg once daily routinely during his "allergy season" and this helps tremendously. If he has a "flair up", I give it twice a day.

Location: stray dump capital of the world | We have a couple that do this, so we keep them bathed pretty regular to get salt sweat off, usually one steriod shot will keep it at bay for the summer and finally, we spray an entire small bottle of frontline on them. (I thought I had one in the house to give you the size, but I don't. It's the smallest they make.) If I'm not mistaken, you can repeat the frontline once a month. I can double check on that. We've never had to use frontline more than once in the summer.
