What can I spray or do safely around horse to get rid of these spiders? I have enough spider nests on my wooden posts to have a sequel of 'The Thing' in a few weeks. In fact, we just killed one that was huge!

I understand the purpose of the spiders... Killing flies, Mosquitos, etc. However, when they are big enough to have to kill with a pellet gun, they have to go! Will vinegar work? Or what can I buy that'll not hurt my horses but deter them from returning?

I'm going to start knocking webs down tonight but I'm sure they'll come right back.

Fly Predators work like magic for flies in my neck of the woods. As far as spiders, maybe find something that eats spiders? A few bird houses or cats perhaps!

Spiders are my boogieman in life, but the barn or outside in general I will tolerate them because of the beneficial duties they perform.  I don't mind snakes (at least the shivery-scared kind of minding), but I'd rather relocate them so I don't accidentally bother one and get bit in the hay barn.

Now if I lived more south, I would want the recluses gone, if possible.  I'm still not healed 100% from a recluse bite I got in 1999!

Some where I read that Peppermint and vinegar repels them including flies and mosquito. I want to plant peppermint all over my yard.

Ditto on the Tempo....works great and safe after it's dried.   Peppermint oil works to keep spiders away as well.  Fly predators and Tempo would be a great program for control of insects.

I've had good luck with killing big spiders with Fly Spray! I've had late night run ins with Black Widows and have killed with the Fly Spray. Not sure how you can really use that to prevent them from coming back, but it works to get them gone!

Thanks everyone. I'll look into the Tempo. I think this weekend I'll kick all of my horses out of the barn and give the barn a good cleaning. I'm so glad my barn has decent lighting... There are a few spiders running around here that are bigger then the mice.

This is so aggravating. Between my house and the barn... Im right there with Komet, burn it down! Though I dont think my realtor would appreciate that. I cant keep up with these pests. First I had a rat problem in the barn, then a mouse problem in the bottom cupboards in the house, and now a feral cat and spider problem. Once I chase off one thing, another shows up.

I would wash everything out and then spray using some term of long term spray, several are recommended above. Control the flies with fly predators and daily stall cleanings. I would also buy a cat to manage other pests. I hate spiders.

Thanks everyone. It looks like my barns going to get a good spring cleaning this weekend.
I've solved all my other pest issues. I dont have much of a fly problem right now. I was blessed with a stray kitten a few months back and he's taken charge over the barn. Between him and my pellet gun, we have that barn pest free minus the spiders. Unfortunately other feral cats have come in and tried to beat my little guy up. If its not one thing, it's another it seems. Right now I can handle four legged pests.. The 8 legged ones have to go.

We have black widows and Pyranha fly spray even kills them so I use it in my well house and wherever I see a web or a spider that is near where I'm going to be reaching or walking. :-) Easy since I spray the horses regularly this time of year anyway.

If you are looking for a safe and easy way to rid of the spiders I bought a Cobweb Winder from Amazon. It coils the webbing into a neat ball on a wand. The horses didn't mind its use and the spider webs disappeared fast. Before I was just using my broom but it seemed to spread the problem around and make a mess. Good luck everyone!

Insect glue traps work too.  The TomCat brand is good.  You can get them at Wal-Mart.  Don't leave them flat....tent them.  Just don't let your toads get into them.  They're the best little spider-getters ever.  They're on the verge of hibernation now though, at least in our area.

I wash down the interior of my barn twice a year -- then use a leaf blower to clean the barn -- it pretty much blows all the bugs / webs, etc., outta there..... and a side benefit is my horses are not bothered by the loud noise. I have a leaf blower that is dedicated the barn-- use it to "sweep" the aisle most every day.

If only it would blow away the skunk I've seen outside the barn a couple of early mornings recently....

By the way, they are designed to get rid of mice

Use a broom and then water spray your barn down to clear all
the dust and webs ....

Let dry with fans or doors opened for 3-4 hours and then use
one of these products below per the instructions ....

Either one specializes in killing spiders which are tuff to get
rid of.... You will be amazed at the overall barrier for flies and
other insects that will happen .... Stray flies flying into you barn
door will turn into kamikaze pilots as they hit the ground dead as
a door nail ...

This comes in spray cans too and can be bought at Lowes or
Home Depot .... TERRO ...
https://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/terro-ready-to-use-home-insect-kill...

***********************************************************
This one is a concentrate and makes several gallons ... if you are quick
enough you can use a garden sprayer on the end of a water hose to
spray the barn down ..
I usually keep horses out of the barn all day or all night for this stuff to
dry .. no fumes or anything ... just my personal precaution ..

This one can be mixed up by the gallon with a few cc's to make a great
on the horse fly spray.. use a shot syringe to measure ... no more bot
or horse flies .... just mist your horses is all you need to do ..
I buy it from Jeffers ...
https://www.jefferspet.com/products/permectrin-ii?via=5338848b9fa260...

Both Works in your house or garage etc ..

Keeping pests out from the barn requires a lot of efforts. By practicing proper sanitation, a barn owner can keep pests like bugs/spiders out of the barn. By using different suitable insecticides or flycatchers, pests infestation can be controlled. Also, if the infestation rises, it becomes important to consult the exterminators in Sacramento to help with the extermination process that will also not harm anyone.

I have wondered about those. Do they seem to bother your dogs or horses?

I have a little spray bottle that I put water and peppermint oil in and that helps with the spiders and sometimes the mice but they are pretty stubborn. I have used apple cider vinegar as well and that seems to keep the mice away too but once the smell goes away they come right back.

Once it cools off, I will go back to setting my mouse traps. We use taffy and right now it's hot enough they can pull it off without setting the traps.
