Theyre tiny lol it seems. Sherry Cervi and Fallon are the only "tall" ones I can think of.

it's a pdf file but basically most on that list is 5'2-5'5 and 105-110 lbs average. There are a few who are taller but still around 130lbs I believe one of the well known pros from awhile back has a weight discussion somewhere and it basically tells you that if you want to win at the top level and help your horse you basically have to be 110lbs and no more. That is a bit of a stretch but still true.. less weigh helps a horse run faster but there's some who weigh 140 and a little more and still top NFR girls; they are just very far and few between.

How come there are so many successful men running in futurities and divisional barrel races that definately are over 110? Personally I think it has more to do with balance and aggressive riding!

I don't think "weight" is the factor, I think it's being fit. Like someone else pointed out, there are a lot of guys in the futurity world that definitely weigh over 110. But they're also fit and have great balance.

A fit 140lb person is going to ride better than a person that weighs 140lbs because they're overweight, IMO.

ETA I only weigh 110 and I get outran by plenty of people that weigh more than me (;

Weight makes a difference. Riding ability makes more difference. Most great riders are fit and at a healthy weight for their height and gender.

I think it has to do with being a balance rider too, but most of the men that I see winning or not big, they are small frame and light weight.

yep most of the MEN are not big guys. I probably outweigh 90% of them and I'm not big or heavy. I posted facts, not my own opinion on the weight thing. I could care less. If you have a horse who can carry the extra pounds and win, more power to the horse!

This. Being 6'0, I would look SICK at 110 lbs. My fit, healthy weight is about 150 lbs or so, with a low BMI.

I'm not overly tall, but at 5-07 I wouldn't have the strength to ride right at 110. (I don't fall into the big girl category either, I just like to point out that it's more about strength to weight ratio.). Can you do more than one pull up, unassisted? Can you do more than 25 push-ups without stopping? Then your strength to weight ratio probably needs some work.
I don't care who you are, if you're overweight you cannot do a pull up. And you are at a disadvantage in timed events. Not saying it can't be done, but I haven't seen many overweight or out of shape girls at NFR.

I'm 6' as well. I would be EMACIATED at 110. 160 plus or minus 10 lbs is more of an ideal weight for me. I just can't imagine being 5' though. Like I was that height in elementary school.

Since ALL women tell the truth about their weight I bet that article has tons of truth to it! Simple muscle that these girls have on them stretched over bone= more than 110#, it takes a very tiny gal to weigh that!

When body fat is too low, women stop menstruating.  Not something you want to do to yourself.  My threshhold is around 110...don't have a problem with that anymore, LOL but I used to sometimes in the summer.

Most of them ARE very tiny.
I have only seen them randomly at the trade shows at the NFR or at the buckle presentations, but they are very, very small.

No one is saying any of the top girls look unhealthy. Someone mentioned earlier that being around 110 lbs would be ideal... i mentioned that there are tall barrel racers out there that do well and there is no way they could weigh 110lbs because if they did, they would look very unhealthy. This kind of started a conversation about tall girls in general, weighing 110lbs. Of course short girls who are fit are going to weight less than a fit tall girl, thats just a fact. Again no one is saying any of the NFR girls look bad :) We are just competitive women discussing weight advantanges or disadvantages :)

I almost had a mini panic attack reading the first page! I'm 5'3" and weigh at 130. I also work outside on my husbands calf ranch though and you can't be a tiny lady to pick up and hold onto calves lol! My lowest weight was 117 and that was such a struggle for me and very unhealthy. I think I rode worse when I was at that weight anyway! I think everyone has a healthy weight section that their body naturally goes to.

The NFR girls that I have seen are very healthy looking, I dont think any of them look fril or skinny they all look fit and healthy. They have to eat to beable to keep up with their power house horses.

Ideal for me to is to be extremely healthy, fit, strong, looking younger, and near the point folks think I am too thin. LOL I forgot to add this has been a dream for sometime, but not achieved.

I'm 5'4" and when I'm at my fittest I am 120lbs. Any smaller and I look unhealthy. But I have a curvy build with boobs and hips. I'm currently fluctuating between 130-135. I put on a bit of weight and sat around too much with this extremely cold and long winter we had. So now I'm struggling at getting the weight off and back to 125lb which is a weight that I can hold pretty easily by being fit but yet not having to diet (which I am horrible at since I have no will power when it comes to food....lol).

Well I'm 5'6" and weigh 107. I'm not unhealthy, I have plenty enough muscle to ride "correctly". I admit id like to gain a few pounds since before I had my son (3years ago) I averaged around 112. I have never been told by a doctor I was unhealthy, I just have a good metabolism for now I guess. But just to let y'all know even at 107lbs I can still carry feed sacks, hay bales and sling a roping saddle over a horse ;)
However because of my weight I think I've had more opportunities to ride horses for others, several people have asked me to run or just leg up their horses after an injury.

I think it really depends on age, skin, overall bone structure, body type, muscle, where and how a person carries weight. I am sure you look very healthy at your weight. I am the same height as you. If I was near your weight, people would recommend me a stay in the hospital because I would look truly anorexic. My ideal weight would be 125-135....although there might be some who would think I would be too thin. As I get older it might not look good on me. I think age makes a difference in how a particular weight looks on person. I have been around 115 in high school. I looked very healthy then. I would not look that way now because the skin just doesn't look the same even though I am not old, just older.....as we age our skin sometimes looks younger and healthier with a tiny bit of fat. That's why people get fillers injected in their faces. LOL

I graduated 30 years ago, I weighed nearly the same all through life, even after 4 kids, until..... Middle age. I'm almost where I want to be to be and it's no where near my pre menopausal weight. Lol. I'm getting fit again though and feel 100% better than I did a year ago. Long story short, haha.    I agree with your post. Our skin sags, etc as we age.  I wouldn't look healthy at my 'old ' weight. I think a person can 'feel' when they're at their healthiest and best weight, toned and it's different for each one of us.

I am 5'4" and currently 120 pounds. I was a lot more fit when I was closer to 130 and at that weight had very very little fat on my body and was in sooo much better shape. I'd much rather be fit and weigh more than lighter and out of shape, muscle weighs more than fat. I looked thinner at my higher weight and I rode much better. I can't fit into any of my clothes I was wearing at my higher weight now (too small). Now I am just jiggly, unhappy and unmotivated! If you are in good shape why worry about the number?

LMS - 2014-07-20 8:47 AM  Since ALL women tell the truth about their weight I bet that article has tons of truth to it! Simple muscle that these girls have on them stretched over bone= more than 110#, it takes a very tiny gal to weigh that!

Exactly! Lol! I'm not saying all of these women aren't tiny and in great shape! I'm sure they are! But seriously, show me a woman that doesn't fudge the #'s by 5-10+ lbs anytime she's asked to put her weight down?

Seriously though- I have seen most of these ladies in person and the short ones are TINY and the tall ones are still mega thin! Look how Fallon looks hippy compared to the rest and she says she weighs 155# and in person I would not call her puffy. The camera does add 10# for sure.

If it gets me to the NFR...I don't care what I have to weigh. At 5'7" if I look like crap with my gold buckle, new truck, and wads of cash...sure. I can eat at In-N-out on the way home from winning. LOL As long as I am strong enough to stay on my horse and have the stamina to ride well for 10 days straight, I'd totally do it, and once I have delivered my baby, that is my goal.

If you use a BMI calculator, most of the listed heights and weights are at the low end of "normal," with four in the underweight range.

However, if they are competitive and feel good at the weight they are at, who am I to tell an athlete with a poor BMI that she is unhealthy?

There are several that even if you add 10 lbs to the declared weight, they are still "underweight" according to their BMI.  The majority are at the bottom end of "normal," even adusting the weight.
