Location: Ohio | I'm am so freaking mad right now! On my way home from grocery shopping earlier I noticed a pasture full of horses with one horse in pretty rough shape right off the main highway. I whip my truck around to get a better look and see an emaciated horse with its hindquarters covered in blood. The closer I get to the horse the more horrified I become, the horse had prolapsed, its tail was one bloody matted mess and it had been swatting fly's so long that the dried blood caked to its tail had rubbed all hide off its hindquarters (any where the tail bone could touch looked like someone had literally tried to skin the animal!)... this was not a fresh prolapse! I could tell it was in a lot of pain.
So I swallow the cuss words I want to scream at these people and go knock on the door. Turns out an elderly couple live there and the horses are owned by her daughter who doesn't even live on the property. When I explain my concern about the prolapse, she starts telling me how her daughter had a vet out over 2 weeks ago and they diagnosed the horse with cancer and nothing could be done (b.s. I worked for a vet and know what a prolapse looks like!). The woman goes on to tell me that many people have stopped by and that she has told her daughter to get the horse help but the daughter reply's with a "don't tell me what to do attitude" and that the daughter hasn't done anything to help the horse. They haven't even been given hay or feed since spring and their pasture is eaten down so much that it wont make it long. The elderly woman also went on to tell me that he daughter had to "shoot" ONE of her stallions (yes, pluralized stallions!) a few years ago because it kicked her in the face and was mean... so she is "one of those" kind of horse owners. There is nothing in her pasture worth breeding but thats another an of worms.
As soon as I got home I looked up their address and called the humane society with all the info I have and I am waiting for someone to return my call. Im so sick about this though, out humane society SUCKS when it comes to horses. I honestly thought about going after dark with my horse trailer and bringing it home and calling the vet but I doubt that would end well. The horse was just so good natured, letting me reach over the fence to look at the area and let me love on her for a few minutes. Just makes me sick to think about it suffering in this heat... Excuse all the typos, Im so mad I know there are tons of details I have left out and my brain isn't catching grammar mistakes. |

+1
If you really want something to be done, I would go down there (if it's not too far to drive) and fill out an actual statement on the matter. Phone calls sometimes have a way of not being looked into or taken as top priority. Please don't move the horse either -- I sure don't want you being charged with evidence tampering if there is enough evidence to make a case. |

Location: Ohio | One of my best friends husbands is a sheriff and I'm waiting on her to call me back so I can get his cell # and fill her in to what it going on (we also worked together at a vet clinic back in the day). If all goes well I may see if I can meet him and show him the horse tonight. Then again I may have to go file a report first... |

Location: Ohio | So angry, called my friends husband who is off duty tonight and he said even filing a report wont get anyone to go look at the horse and that it would just get pushed to the bottom of the pile. He did tell me however to talk to the prosecuting attorney in the morning if I haven't heard back from the humane society. I may be able to file some sort of small claims lawsuit if I can get all of the owners information and then someone will HAVE to go look at the horse. Our county sucks when it comes to animal welfare. |

Location: Ohio | I just put my camera on the charger. Hopefully when I go out the horse is close to the fence still, no way to sneak around and get photos because their horse pasture goes all the way around the house. Good thing is I parked away from their driveway off the highway so they wont know my truck. Their is one rescue close by so I may call and see if they can help even before I get photos. Their rescue is well known and has been visited by people like Stacey Westfall so fingers crossed they can help me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Muj69eBJQ_A&list=UUqPxAaCHNGBa7d9WD6... |

| This would be my last choice, but around here the local news station would have a field day with this. I have very mixed feelings about this solution but that poor horse has suffered enough. Thinking about her suffering makes me sick. I can't comprehend the neglect some animals have to suffer. It is inexcusable. |

| Had a similar case in my neck of the woods. Neighbor called sherif nothing got done. A week went by with the horse near death. She got mad and up loaded pics to Facebook and tagged city officials. Horse was picked up and owner arrested in two hours after posting. |

That horse is a saint for all its been put through and if no one in my area will help me legally, I will start pushing for them to sell me the horse or turn it over to me. If they would do that I could at least give it one good day in a fly free stall, a good meal and shady place to be buried. |

Location: Ohio | That's what it looked like to me. Infected and inflamed tissue protruding out of the rectal area, flesh was still brightly pigmented with darker dead tissue in areas. Blood caked tail, no hair or skin left on hindquarters from rubbing on fence/barn and tail trying to keep flys away. If I can get my camera charged and get close enough I will take some pictures. I may be wrong about it being a prolapse but I have seen tons of cattle get treated for it and this is what it looks like to me. |

Location: stray dump capital of the world | Did you ask the old lady if you could have the horse? She just might let you take it off her hands especially since multiple people have stopped by to complain and the daughter is a loser. I hope you get it figured out. Poor thing...Some people shouldn't be allowed to own a flippen rock. ETA: I saw a horse with its halter on wrong where the part that goes behind the ears was across the forehead like a browband. It was on extremely tight and had grown into the horse's head. I called our humane society and got no help from them. I called the sheriff's department and they were out here within 30 minutes taking a statement from me and had me show them where the horse was.

| We had some neglect issues at a local barn and finally people organized a "standing together for the horses" on facebook and the community went out on a few different days and stood on the roadside and got media attention until someone finally stepped in. After 30+ years of neglecting horses, something was finally done.... and the "stand" was what it took.
We also have a very reputable rescue up here and she networks with many rescues across the country. Her name is Drew Fitzpatrick - MN Hooved Animal Rescue. She may have a contact or may have some additional ideas.
Good luck and bless you for standing up for them. Keep us posted. |

I can see how if a horse had tumors around its anus it could look like a rectal prolapse. Regardless, sounds like this horse needs put out of its misery.

Location: Ohio | The prolapse is rectal. I have been out there 3 times so far today trying to get pictures but the horses have been hanging around under the barn awning thanks to the heat index being 97 here, the last time I was out there was a different car in the driveway and the injured horse was nowhere to be seen. I will try a few more times this evening and see if the horse has been removed or if they are out grazing. I have yet to hear back from the humane society or local rescue so I will trying calling again in a bit.

I do know it can happen... happened to my friend's pony. It's very serious and painful. My friend's pony prolapsed rectally twice. They put him back together the first time and he was doing okay for a couple months. When it happened the second time, they tried to fix him, but it wouldn't hold. They put him down.
I can't imagine the pain this poor horse is in. What the heck is wrong with people? It boggles my mind. I personally can't believe the horse is still alive. |

I would try and take a peek in the barn. I would go ask to purchase and have the horse. |

Location: wherever my daughter's running | First bless you for trying to help this poor horse. Second - if you find yourself in the position that they are willing to give you the horse for fear with the other complaints they may get in trouble have the owner of the horse provide you with a written, signed, and dated statement that she is giving you this horse (add detailed description of the horse - color, age, markings, gender, etc.) free and clear. This may help protect you should she try to come bak on you about anything - such as taking the horse, etc. People are crazy. I found myself in a similar situation once and was given this advice. Was glad I took it. Good luck and please update us on what is going on when you can. |

Location: Texas | I've called before about emaciated horses and was told the following:
Law enforcement won't really get involved until an animal dies. Humane societies don't have the authority to take possession of animals without law enforcement's involvement.
The cost of feeding and rehabilitating horses makes it to where law enforcement does NOT want to get involved. Also, most don't have the facilities to take horses in.
Rescue groups cannot get possession of an animal without law enforcement being involved.
Finally, for as much as you want to help this horse, do it the legal way. If you steal the horse, that is THEFT. Regardless that you would be saving the animal, the law won't look at it that way.
Your best bet is to take pictures, post them on Facebook. Link them to your local police department's page. And possibly send an email to a local news agency. Nothing gets action faster than public attention.
Good luck! |

I have contacted a few more rescues and chatted with a few ladies about what could be done, they are willing to help if I can get them pictures (they are all over 3 hours away). I have yet to see the horse out in the open again but Im hoping its just because of the weather change and they are sticking to the backside of the pasture close to the barn... I am really hoping they haven't just locked the mare up in a stall.
