I've had this lump checked before by a dentist and a vet, both of which said that it was nothing to be worried about, basically just a calcium deposit or tooth that grew the wrong way. Neither wanted to look further into it or xray/biopsy. Lately I have noticed it had a little inflammation/swelling around it and it's has become a little squishy, when it is usually rock hard. I'm wondering if I should take him back and get it checked out again?

Heres a few pix, not the best but you can see the location and size of lump

If you are worried about it, then take him back to the vet and get it checked out, I would..

If he was 5 or under I wouldn't have worried about it as many times it is caused by retained  caps.

Did your vet say what he thought it was when he first looke at it?

One of my geldings had a similar lump.  Same response from my vets as you got.  Eventually it kind of softened up and would drain a little bit and then close back up. This went on for close to a year.   Vets continued to be uninterested.  Eventually it just disappeared.  It has now been a couple of years and it has not reappeared.

I had a horse at my barn with a similar lump. Vet biopsied it and it was a type of lymph cancer. She said not to worry and it shouldn't get worse. Horse lived to be 28 and ended up with laminitis and an eye infection so had to PTS.

We've had a few with them, some will reabsorb and some will harden and stay that way forever. If you're worried about it ask the vet to biopsy it for you...

I made an appointment with my vet for later this afternoon just to be safe, the fact that it went from being rock hard to squishy and inflamed bothers me!! Will keep everyone updated!
