Location: Over by those oil wells, TX | It's the pitts! Please create a weight loss program where those of us who are exhausted after work every day can get linked up for a month to a machine...then wake up in 4 weeks 30 pounds lighter and back in riding shape. lol! I remember even 10 years ago when I had endless energy! I know some of us have different jobs that keep us on our feet and you may think you have it worse but the thing is that long hours sitting and reading and researching all day is tiring too although in a different way. Enjoy your youth!

Location: East Texas | I seem to be in the same boat. I started walking several months ago and was walking approximately 5 to 7 miles a day and I gained weight. I have not walked in three weeks and I am not feeling as good as I did so I am going to start back walking again but still frustrated. I am an investigator for a sheriff department and a stress eater so I do a lot of reading typing and eating! I am going to start supplementing with Zeal to help curb my cravings. |

Location: Blissfully happy Giants fan!!! | I am not older but I can tell you a few things that I have learned. First, it is your DIET that drives everything, not the exercise part. And make sure you aren't thirsty for water first before you eat. You will be surprised at how much your boy is craving water and not food. People are shocked at how little I eat and I am not skinny (not fat but you cna't see bones on me, if you get what I am saying). More water, less food, nothing processed!!!! I think for people who have a desk job (like me), this is really important.
I work way more than 8 hours a day. I get to the office about 7:45 and if I am not on the road, I am not typically getting home until closer to 6. If I am on the road, getting home at 6 is a good day. And I don't take a lunch-I eat and keep working. I ride three horses too.
I have found the only time I can work out is in the morning. My alarm wakes up at 4:45. I feed all the animals and head to the gym (like 2 minutes away from me). I work out for one hour and then come home and get ready for work.
My horses have been on vacation this month so in order to keep up the active part of me after work, I have been doing 2 a days. That's right-twice to the gym. I don't do anything the second time that I did in the morning. However, vacation is almost over so I will just go back to riding the three girls.
I can't stress enough the importance of drinking A LOT of water (my acupuncturist said half your weight in ounces), eating clean, and making sure you are not thirsty first before you eat. It drives everything.
PS-my aunt and I had this conversation over the weekend and she is almost 60. She agreed with everything I said and said she eats way less than she did 30 years ago. She just doesn't need that much food. Food for fuel. That is my motto.

| I agree. My problem is I have a desk job, have 3 horses, I walk, I take Plexius Slim, I try to eat healthy (no processed foods), and I have cut way down and I only try to eat 1200 calories a day. Some say that is not enough, but I am 63 and not as active as I was even 10 years ago. So with doing all this, I STILL cannot lose the weight. And YES I drink lots of water. |

| Be careful with your water intake. I didn't think you could drink too much water, but my 80 yr.old dad did and ended up in the hospital for low potassium. He was diagnosed with emphysema, though and was drinking alot to help thin the mucus in his lungs. The emphysema may have been a big factor. The doctor just told him to drink a certain amount and no more unless he was outside sweating a lot. It seems like he was drinking at least 8 oz. every hour while he was in the office plus more at meals, but this was in the winter, not summer. |

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | Argh... You sound just like me. Typical day for me is leaving the house at 6:15-30. One hour commute. Work till 5:30 or 6... and home at 7:30. I'm trying to ride 2-3 horses, one that's really green. I know going to the gym is great...but there are only so many hours in the day. When I'm home, I want to be outside working with my horses or hanging out with my husband.
The only thing that works for me is Atkins. Cut the carbs and I (very slowly) lose weight. They have a tracker app that's really handy. I have one of their shakes in the car for breakfast, and one of the protein bars about 9 or 10. I took 2 weeks off the first part of this month, but I've still lost 20 lbs since mid-April. Trying to work in some core strength that's quick, like a few planks a day. It's hard to stick to something day in and day out....there's weeks I don't drop a single flippin lb... Step back and look at the big picture. You can do it!
I keep a 33oz water bottle on my desk, make sure I drink 4 of them daily.

| I've tried Atkins, just didn't work for me, tried Paleo, works to a degree, I know I cannot do the breads so I guess kinda gluten free, can't do spicy foods anymore, nor beer (LOL). I can't eat a lot of things I used to so it is mainly fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables and chicken and fish. You would think I would be able to lose something. But doesn't seem to. |

Location: Over by those oil wells, TX | Atkins worked for me great when I got a divorce 9 years ago...lol but the divorce really really curbed my appetite so starting the diet was a "piece of cake". haha. I should probably cut some carbs and tend to eat them because they make me happy. :-( Temporarily.
Herbie...Spencer is my saving grace! I haven't been riding as much as I should and I know there are no excuses other than lack of energy. You can't have the only young handsome guy in my life!! haha!!

| Chin up! You can do it - persistence and effort. The little changes add up over time.
I really thought I was getting now where with my diet change and exercising because my scale didn't change - not one pound! However, I took some pictures and wowza! The difference sure showed there.
It is a journey to change your diet, your lifestyle, and make a commitment to doing something different. Just because you have set backs or plateaus doesn't mean you are not progressing and moving forward. You CAN DO IT! My mom is currently going through this and hates exercising with a passion - but we have started keeping each other accountable. It helps to have someone to go through it with - mind you we are 2 time zones apart!
Remember that carbs are fuel (energy), protein builds lean muscle, and healthy fats bring a nice sheen to hair, nails, and skin. Eat accordingly and things will add up!
Good Luck! You can do it!!! |

| I understand exactly - same age, desk job, long hours, tired and lack of energy all the time.
After a certain age, it is not strictly diet that drives your weight loss. I eat way less and way better than I did when I was younger and cannot lose weight. It does take exercise, but that's tough when you work long hours and are totally wrung out when you get home, and still have to feed everyone, clean, buy groceries, cook, laundry, etc..
If you find a solution, please let me know. |

| It is tough, I lost almost 50 pounds and had no problems keeping it off for 4 years. I exercise 6-7 hours per week and eat clean, 95% of my diet was excellent, the other 5%- chocolate a couple of times a week or cake on special occasions. I have gone through meno pause, same exercise and eating habits and I have put on almost 8 pounds. Things change as we get older and it makes me mad! I have to really watch the calories now, something I did not have to do before, even though I don't eat processed foods and most everything I eat is healthy. I did a lot of weights before but have added more weights to my workout program. At my gym they constantly are saying as you get older weights are just as important as cardio. |

YES carbs, protein & healthy fats are KEY....but remember carbs aren't just potatoes, bread or pasta (those are refined).....fruits & veggies are depending on their glycemic index :)
Take it day by day...... |

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | I think when I tried doing Atkins before I did the 'old' version and didn't really understand how to eat on it. You can eat most vegtables even in phase 1. I eat tons of spinach, leafy greens, bell peppers, tomatoes... etc. Pay attention to sauces used. I will go weeks where I might even go up a lb, I weigh on a digital scale first thing every morning and it's irritating to be busting your butt and see no changes.
It's generally late when I get in the house at night. Dinner is often 2 slices of cheese and a glass of merlot.
I'm just not willing to give up the bits of time I can steal to ride/haul my horses to go to the gym. I know it would make things work faster, but I need my time at home. I challenge anyone to consitently carve out 6-7 hours of workout time when they're gone for work 12-13 hours a day....plus riding competitively. I do spend a lot of time doing yard work on wknds....we have a big yard and a push mower. I count that!

Location: Kentucky | You don't need to diet, read books, buy wraps, shakes, or pills. Just eat veggies, fruits, and proteins. Get rid of all of the junk food in your house. Surround yourself with things that are sold on the perimiders of grocery stores. You will need to exercise also. Start with 30 minutes three days a week. Weights are your friend. When you lift weights, you burn more calories, and that burn LASTS longer.

| Yes that is true, but even when you do that, i.e. eat right, exercise, whatever and the weight still doesn't budge..then what. I'm not giving up. It was just way easier when I was younger. I don't even eat half of what I used to eat and could still lose. Seems like went I hit the menopause years, everything just slowed down. I used to ride my own horses plus train outside horses as well and still worked 8 hours outside of the home. Can't do that now. |

Location: Over by those oil wells, TX | yes...agree about metabolism issues. Where is a pill for that lol! I wanted to take the garcinia cambogia and ordered a bunch...then I learned it can have some dangerous side effects when taken with Lipitor. That stinks because it really did seem to help me have the energy to stay more active without feeling like I was running on empty as I feel now. :-( |

Location: Blissfully happy Giants fan!!! | I just read something about metabolism on twitter. Something to do with cardio, heart rate, and what you do AFTER your cardio is what makes the difference. Now I cant remember where I put it.
Also, I stay away from fruits. Fruits produce natural sugars and my body can't handle that. I also can't eat more than one or two nuts a day either (my digestive sytem can't tolerate it). I have a 6 inch scar running from my sternum through my belly button and have some very serious digestive issues that have forced me to pay very close attention to what foods trigger what and how much I can eat and when.
For instance, I don't eat dinner anymore unless for a reason (family is in town, special occasion, etc). I have found if I eat after about 4pm, my digestive system has a bad reaction. It is amazing what you will learn about yourself when you look at how foods (especially processed foods) react with your body. |

Location: Over by those oil wells, TX | sassy&tessa... yikes...I eat lots of fruit in summer and lots of almonds too. One thing I recently did was switch to almond soy milk. But then I indulge in ice cream once a week. You know putting this all down on paper makes me realize I've picked up some very bad eating habits. Now I can't help but wonder if the food alone is sapping my energy...maybe like a constant carb low. I eat lots of subway veggie sandwiches too. Just the veggies thinking it was healthy...their bread isn't real heavy I don't think. |

| Oh I hear ya on the digestive issue stuff. I cannot and I mean cannot tolerate peanuts and most nuts. It really does a number on me. Found that out the hard way. I can tolerate most fruits in moderation. I just have this feeling of fullness all the time. One thing I have added more of is fiber. |

| Most fruits are high in sugar (carbs) so while some fruits are okay, it's best to limit to those on the lower end of the glycemic index. |

Might want to re-evaluate those sandwiches....not only would they put me to sleep, but I would blow up on them. Almonds are great, if you can be really disciplined and not eat the whole bag. I'm not at a point that I allow myself to eat any nuts. Fruits are high in sugar...they're out for now as well. Every 2-3 wks we will go out and I'll have 1 meal of whatever I want..then it's back to the grind. |
