I had a guy approach me about feed lotting about 40 head of weanling calves on our place. He just wants to rent 2 of our paddocks. He will hay and feed, and care for them. All I have to do is rent him the paddocks an let him use our water. He said to tell him how much, either for the paddocks or by the head. Does anyone have an idea of what a fair rate would be? I think I should bill by the head because it could be somewhere between 40 and 70 calves, for about 30 to 45 days, an I have absolutely no idea. However, I do know the cost of water for that many calves is gonna get costly..lol..
Thanks in advance.

I would do it by the head with a minumum dollar amount. That way you are protected both ways.

I can't help with the cost, but don't forget that you will likely have "reclaim" those paddocks to make them useful again (depending on their size & his mgmt practices). Consider that cost when you are calculating the lease price.

First the cost of water is not going to b costly it will b astronomical!! It insane how much water those little bitty calves have to drink especially during the summer!!
They also have to have real good shade if u r where it is Hot like it is!! Other wise they will drop like flies!!
Oh and speaking of flies those plus smell will increase by the ten fold!!
Be sure to know what he is feeding them, weakling calves need a lot more nutrition, worming etc.....
The list could go on for forever!! Amd we don't even have that many at a time. But another thing is the more u have n one spot the higher the death rate.

Cattle prices r extremely high right now, so there will b a lot of people looking to feed out calves to get them sold. But the people raising r selling because of feed cost and lack of grass etc.

Basically b real careful on ur decision!!

Also: don't put little calves next to ur horses cuz they will chew their tails mane and whatever they can off!!

I hope I don't sound negative just giving the "all about it" part.

thanks for the info...its been years since we have had calves around, I have 78 acres, here, but he just wants the two padocks, we can always put them in a 3rd if needed, which is fine with me, and I have considered the damage to the paddocks. the smell wont bother me, they are a ways from my house.. There is not adequate shade in those particular pens tho, and I am in Ok. He is wanting them here while he feeds them out and weans them before he puts them on wheat. I just have no idea on the $$ was hoping someone here might have an estimate.. He is going to handle all the labor for caring for them.
Thanks for the info

We are in Kansas. We charge $0.06 per head per day for water, and that price is the same whether it is feeder cattle or cows. We've been charging that price for a couple of years and prior to that we were charging $0.05. A couple years ago we rented some pens to hold cattle for about a month while we were in between pastures. We used their water but provided all of the care and feed. I can't remember what we paid for the use of the pens, but we paid per head per day.

Unless you kow him WELL, I would use caution.  UNLESS you want to be out there feeding, watering, and checking on them yourself!  Been there, done THAT.  WAY too many folks talk a good game, but when it comes down to it most don't care for their critters the way YOU think they should. (Or they don't do it at all. )

Another thing I would caution about is getting paid. Make sure that the cattle don't leave your property until you are paid in full. I know of a guy locally that still owes farmers pasture rent from several years ago. The only ones that got paid were the ones that wouldn't allow the cattle to be loaded out until they had cash in hand. And the sheriff was sitting there while it all went down. Some people talk a smooth game, but when it comes down to it they aren't as honest as they make you believe.

We custom feed cattle.
is this a dry lot or are they grazing?
Where are you at? Theres a ton of regional difference in cattle feed prices.

We figure we need $0. 10 -$0. 20 a day to cover matiance (fence repair, corral cleaning, heat / power for waters)
We charge per pound gained, initial processing fees branding, and handling fees for treating, and per head ran through loading chutes (to cover the cost of work loading and unloading the stock)

With him feeding and doing the care / doctoring of the calves should they get sick you cant charge for that. Is he using your chute? I would charge for that it adds was and tare on your equipment.

Are you bedding the pens? That will add to the yardage costs. If you want you can pm me.

If it was us we would charge .25 to .30 per day however if your paddocks are grass grazing paddocks it would be .60-.65 per pound gained (.05 for matiance then cost of forage being eaten) but this can vary per region.

So you will be setteling calves? I would not do this in barbwire and if I was not prepared to step in and treat calves, not to often you ween 50+ calves and one dosent get sick, its stressful on them and nosie for you lol!

Come fall when we start getting fresh calves in can still hear baby calves call in mom in the city lol my head just rings.

Wow, we'd make a killing if we could charge that much! Although we wouldn't have any customers! We charge the $0.06 for water and $0.12 for care and then charge for pasture based on the weight of the cattle. Cows on cornstalk pasture are $1.00 per head per day, and that includes everything except mineral, protein tubs, and any medicine that might be needed. I do think that prices are going to have to increase some, but I'm talking about a few cents.

Then I'm glad I don't have your water bill! That's expensive! I can't imagine if it cost us that much to pump water, we sure wouldn't have any animals or trees!

yup, I know that well, my friend let a friend keep her horses at her place because she lost her lease..There were about 12 horses, in 18 months, she only bought 16 rolls of hay and gave her 500 to buy hay with the winter before. She did send some money for my friend to buy grain for a skinny ole mare of hers for about 3 or 4 weeks, but my friend had to dang near beg, when she finally told her she had to move them because she was out of grass, the lady has been cool to her every since...that woman never took into mind that my friend was selling off her extra horses because there was a shortage of grass...my friend should have never sold her horses, she should have made this woman move her horses long before...AS for this kid, we have known him since he was a youngster that used to ride the rough off colts for me..lol..I have all pipe an cable and I think that's why he wants them here, no escapees.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR ADVISE AND INPUT< I Really need it!!!
