| I am getting ready to advertise an OTT mare. I am not great at selling horses, but I need to try to sell one to buy one.
This mare is only track broke, and I will be clear about that in the ad. But I've never sold one this way and I'm worried about people wanting to come ride her around.
What would you expect looking at/buying an OTT horse? Or those that have sold them, how did you market them?
I really appreciate any advice. |

Location: Pacific Northwest | Just market them as an OTT horse. As long as you state it in the ad you don't have anything to worry about, people buy OTT horses all the time. If someone comes to look at the horse that you don't think is a good match, you just tell them no (: Make sure you say whether its sound, how long its been off the track, how much retraining its had (if it hasnt had any say that too), and what you think a good second job would be for it.
If I was going to look at one I would like to be able to at least see it move in a round pen or something if riding it absolutely wasn't possible. |

| I've bought several OTT horses in the past (thoroughbreds). When I went to look all I was expecting was to be able to put my hands on the horse, check legs etc, and watch them jog out. |

| Thanks! She's gentle and sweet and ready for a job. That's a great idea about the round pen video!
So in the ad I shouldn't have to mention specifically that you can come look at her, but please don't expect to ride her down the road - lol! I just avoid confrontation like the plague and I don't want someone showing up expecting to hop on and lope circles. |

Location: North Dakota | The people in my area always start them with a stock saddle for a few weeks before marketing them. They bring more money that way. |

| Yes, I have just started her saddled in the round pen, but now I need to sell her sooner than expected. She will be priced accordingly and a very well bred, very nice prospect. I think I'm being overly proactive to avoid any surprises or ruffled feathers. |

Location: WI | I bought mine off the track as a late 3 year old. Didn't even think to ride before I tried. Just did a vet check. If people ask to ride and you aren't comfortable, just tell them. I found mine on a website for OT QH's. |

I know how you feel. I recently sold a green 10 year old mare. I'd had her since she was a yearling but over her whole life she probably had less than 45 rides on her. She had good basics, walk, trot, stop, turn, but she was green and I got nervous when people would come to try her. I didn't want them to expect her to be able to do a lot, and I also didn't want people on her that were maybe not as good of riders as they thought. But she's at a good home now.
You'll find someone for your horse, there are a lot of people out there that like retraining OTT horses (: |

| I bought one here on BHW, I bought it within 10 hours of the seller posting. She was straight off the track.

| zI buy off the track horses almost exclusively. I don't expect them to be finished and only really look at pedigree and soundness for desired job. |

| I bought a 3 yr old OTT. Was stock saddle broke as a 2 yr old but in race training. Never wanted to ride her till I knew she knew the basics like WHOA. People should know if they are fresh off the track you don't throw a saddle over and ride off into the sunset! LOL |
