My mare has a swelled up back ankle, not bad but there is swelling. I have been putting the Sore No More Poultice on it. It has gone down some. She is a little lame on it but I do not feel that it is broken. My guess is she twisted or sprained it somehow. What are opinions on using the DMSO? Would that work better than the Sore No More?
I would do a 12 hour sweat, cold hose, 12 hour sweat, cold hose and then continue to cold hose daily.
I would possibly schedule an ultrasound to make sure there is nothing torn.
Just went through this with my horse. He is off for 12 weeks with a sprained ankle and currently on stall rest. These were the directions given to me by my vet.
Thankfully his ultrasound came back clean with nothing torn.
I'd do like the above poster and go back and forth between sweating and cold hosing. I'd sweat with a DMSO, dex, and furacin mix like they prescribe at the vet. If it doesn't clear up soon, I'd contact the vet to have her looked at.
I'd get it ultrasounded if it doesn't calm down soon. Synovitis can happen in fetlocks, and it's best to inject and pull the swelling out and minimize joint damage to avoid surgery as they age.
I've got one that had a swollen fetlock joint that I couldn't control, ultrasounded it, it's got synovial fluid floaters that may eventually need to be removed. Injected it to pull swelling, no it's the wait game to see if it will hold on it's own.
Thanks for all the replies. Yes I was planning on asking the vet if I didn't see any improvement. I would like to stall her, but she would throw a real temper tantrum and I fear she would hurt herself worse.
