It is too far in his mouth?  I am usually told my headstall is too loose with other bits so I put this one tighter than I normally would - I just don't want him to be uncomfortable - I rode him in it and he does fine but want to make sure.  Of course if there is anything else wrong with this pic please let me know - the bit was a little confusing as to which way was which .  Working on getting another curb this was the only one I had although I don't think a curb is needed with this bit I feel more comfortable with one as he is a little on the hard side to stop.

Might let it out maybe one hole on one side. I usually like my bits to have a wrinkle and a half.

Looks a bit tight to me, I agree let it out a little and I would also use bits guards on it, looks like it might do some pinching.

I agree that it looks a tad tight.

And.....what kind of bit is that and what is the purpose? It's definitely interesting.

Is this for real? Ive never seen a bit like that and can't figure out why you would want to use it.

I agree on it being a hair tight, but what kind of bit IS that? Takes the cake for the strangest bit I've ever seen.

It looks like a home made bit which I'm fine with but I'm thinking that they put the mouthpiece on the wrong side of the ring.  I have one close to that but the mouth piece slides on the ring for a gag action.

Looks A bit Snug. That is our bit a Shallow Creek Sc-00 AKA Clover Bit. It is more than o-ring, and less than a shank.  http://www.shallowcreekbit.com

Besides being too tight, is it on correctly? It looks "inside out".

If you put 2 fingers between the bridle and the the horse's face, its usually a good place to start.

It would be impossible to put it on inside out. Upside sown, yes. This one looks like it's on correctly. Thanks for the info, slowpoke!

I will check as to whether it may be "inside out".  This bit came from the horse's previous trainer/owner and is what he was running him in .

I had switched him to a little stronger bit when I first got him because he is strong and I was intimidated by him.  Now that we are getting together I feel that I am able to run him in this.

Love this bit I am thinking about getting one in a chain and a 3 pc dogbone mouth peice. What is a 3 pc Bristol mouth? Is it like a dogbone?

Never Heard of a clover bit, I agree with everyone on it being too snug Might want to check this out for my boy... He likes to run through O's and shakes his head at shanks.
On A side note to the OP, What kind of mouth piece is on this particular bit?

I actually really like this bit. Instead of a curb chain I just bit a thin string. I was riding a real light mare and loved the feel of it on her. I think it's great for colts too who need direct reining rather than neck reining.

So if you took the headstall and curb off you couldn't flip it the other direction?

That is part of the reason it made me thing it may be inside out. I have a Shallow Creek Green Futurity and it is a really nice bit.

Nope. :) Look at where the mouth piece attaches to the ring. It is held in place by being attached to the inside, surrounded by the other rings. If it were attached to the outside of the outermost ring like a normal gag, it would be reversible. I'd compare it to a curb that has shanks that are fixed (not reversible) but have a slight swivel action.

I just pulled it out of my trailer and I don't think there is anyway to flip it to where it would be inside out.

The mouthpiece on this one is a twisted wire.
