We're headed to California for a trip in 3 weeks... (three girls). We will be flying into LAX, vising there for a few days, head to Carlsbad then to Sanfrancisco and Sequoia National park....

Advice on which is a better place to stay between Long Beach, Malibu and Santa Monica or are they all nice?? We're staying with friends the rest of the time.

What are MUST do's in LA? We're planning to see the beach, go to the Japanese American Museum, do the POmpeii Exhibit and Santa Catalina Island. I love history and sight seeing.

Any advice to help us with traveling etc?

On your drive up to San Fran...go check out Solvang (really cool little Danish town), Hearst Castle, and Monterey - love the pier and all the cool little shops and places to get clam chowder.

You have to eat In 'N' Out Burger... there is one close to Carlsbad... If you have time while in the San Diego area, I suggest Hotel Del Coronado, Gas Lamp Quarters, Seaport Village, The Flowers in Carlsbad, taco shop food, Old Town, San Diego de Alcala mission, the list goes on.....

Monterey for sure!  Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, The Lone Cypress....  I could plan you a 2 week vacation in Monterey alone.  We always rent bikes and ride along the coastal paths and kayak Elk Horn Slough. My most favorite place ever.  Also, on the north side of SF Bay, in Sausalito, the Marine Mammal Center is awesome if you are an ocean fan.

Since you love history and need a place to stay in Long Beach I have to recommend staying on the Queen Mary. It was a troop transport during WWII and has tons of history on it. They have tours or you can do a self-guided one. I would recommend eating across the harbor though, as the ship's restaurants are not that great and are kind of pricey. We stay on the ship every year when we visit family down south. Have a great trip!

Yep.

And the advice on Monterey is good. I live in Monterey County, lots to do and see. Go here for dinner and drinks on the patio:

You might bump into Clint Eastwood. Make a reservation by the fireplace if you sit outside. Hubby and I stay here from time to time for kidless evenings. We LOVE it.

When you go to San Fran definitely try and go see the whales at Moss Landing . An excellent tour is available now as well! They are very very active right now with the abundance of anchovies . They come within 50 feet of shore.

Enjoy!

The Queen Mary is an absolute treasure!  They have tours too...I really recommend the WWII tour since you're a history buff.  We've gone on it two times over the years.  Both times, an older gentleman led it and just did a fantastic job!  He knows that ship so well and makes the tour very interesting.  If you don't go on the tour, there is a gift shop with a marble fire place.  Winston Churchill signed the D-Day papers in front of the fireplace.  He traveled on the ship 3 times during WWII.  Okay, I'll stop, but it is truly an amazing ship!

IF money is not a problem , it is expensive to stay there.

Anything up Hwy 1 is fun - Morro Bay, Hearst Castle,  lots to do....

Pismo Beach, Avila Beach -

Is Santa Barbara the one with the haunted hotel that smells of roses if the ghost likes you, according to legend? A friend of mine stayed wherever that hotel is once and said the smell was nearly overpowering!
