I've been wondering if my horses are actually getting the mineral requirements they need from their feed.
What is the min and what is the max? I know it will vary with what hay they are feed and the pasture they have access to if any but I'm wondering if a a daily mineral supplement is always needed.

They were licking the rust on the panels and when I free choiced it to them they were really going thru it for a week but then they leveled off and now I just feed the 2 oz the bag calls for because I switched to alfalfa, rice bran and flax seed instead of a mixed feed.

Great thread topic! I feed the minimum recommended amount of grain by what the label on the bag says and free choice grass pasture or hay but I do not feel comfortable they are getting everything they need so I also add the minimum recommended amount of my loose minerals to their feed. I definitely see a difference in my horses dispositions and coat quality when I'm not adding the minerals.

I feed Strategy and free choice hay. But I also give them Omega Horseshine. I can see a difference in them big time. Coat shine, hooves, and it replaces pysllium supplements which is huge since I live on sand. I also provide Himalayan salt licks. Which my mare LOVESSSS.

I have been feeding omega horsehide for a week and have not noticed any results yet. I'm adding diatomaceous earth, omega horse shine, and bee pollen to nutrena safe choice 1 scoop and empower 1/2 scoop (the high fat) one with just regular orchard grass hay that we baled this spring. I really feel that I need to add a mineral supplement for my guys because they are not getting feed the max amount of feed to get all the vitamins and minerals it says they will get on the bag.
Plus I'm feeling like those who supplement with minerals/vitamins show better condition than those who rely on feed to provide them.
