I'm trying out running my mare in a hack and borrowed a friend's Ugly bit.  So far the mare works great in it!  I tried but friend won't sell me the hack. Darn it! Is there anyone out there that still makes them?

He is no longer making them. His uncle is the original maker and gave him the specs to make them. It's Cowjazz's son.

I was told they were intended to sit lower on the nose. Is the lower setting incorrect or is that just where it works better on this horse?

I totally agree. One of my horses liked it sitting high and the other was right were the soft part of the nose starts.

That they work.......lol

Depending on how you position them on the horses face, lots of whoa, and you get lift.  Horses that like to run hard love them.  I have used these for 20 plus years.  After the last 10 Steve made for me, he asked me to lose his phone number.

Really?  And here I've been thinking what could be so complicated or hard to making them!  It seems like a relatively simple design.  Perhaps getting the welds just right is a pain.

I can't tell you the why or how, but yes, it works......Tres tends to wad up around a barrel, he is also a little front endy.  He works better in this than anything we tried.  Kinsey calls it a glorified halter, but it is much more than that.  She has just not learned to appreciate finding that magic bit for a horse yet.

My son is so busy that I don't know if I could ever get anymore out of him!. They are meant to sit lower on the nose, however each horse likes them differently. I saw the one on the bit swap page that sold for over $200. I suppose that people could TRY to copy one but it won't work like one of the originals.  Cayle's bit has a signature feature.

Kinda like the Turley hacks. Lots of bad copies out there.  None of them have the same feel.  I tried to have a John Israel bit copied, but it wasn't right either, so I had to ante up and spend the money on an original.

I will ask him again. I am sure it would be winterwhen he may have time. He works full time and is putting up about 1000 acres of hay right now by himself.

He should put the price where it makes him want to make them..If people want them they will pay the price and if not..oh well..

Yes that might work! LOL  The high dollar one that sold awhile back was one of his. His work is a little cleaner than Steve's.

Cowjazz, if he does start back making them, I want one for sure.  I have a Bozo hack that I LOVE, and if this one is the original, so to speak....I do want one.  You can PM me if you want, and I will send you my name, address or whatever you think would be necessary. I will save up and wait to see if he will make some more!!

I had one that I used on my roan horse, and someone stole it at a jackpot. It was hanging on my saddle horn. I've never been able to find another one. I didn't see the one on bit auction, but I wouldn't have paid $200 for one.....sure wish I could have found mine. :(

Can you post a different angle? I was thinking something that set these apart was the way the slots slant outwards in the loop that the headstall hooks to?

I bought that one. Why? I already have one of Steve's and was ever so grateful for that one. I bought the one you are talking about because I liked how it is shaped a bit better. I'm sure it's just because it was used, and the one I have made by Steve hasn't been but I didn't want to wait for the new one to bend and shape nicely. So I have one made by Steve and one made by your son. Can't believe I paid that much for a hack, but I like it and sold several bits to make up for it.

Of course, I had to put my mare down that I thougth would really like it. But I think I'm going to try it on my other mare that I'd turned out to pasture and see how she likes it.

Majority of bits are copied from a design a long time ago. That's the way it is. If he isn't making them anymore then I don't see why you guys are negative about it being copied. Charmayne James equal port and shank bit that everyone loves is a Tom Balding copy. Bobby Avila's bits are copies of Don Hansen's. I think he has passed away, so why shouldn't someone continue with a good design? Look at all the copies of Ed Wrights. None of the copies ride like an original but some people can't afford or find an original.

So do Steve's bits and Cayle's bits have the same special feature?  Looks like Cayle's hacks aren't so ugly after all.  HAHA
