Horseflies have been BAD out at my house. Not sure if it's bc it was a cow farm recently or what but they're everywhere. I thought the horses should be ok out today....have plenty of shade, covered in fly spray and fly masks. Was outside about 2 hours prior to bringing them in and they all were fine. I go out to bring them in and my black gelding walks up and he has probably 20 horseflies on his back and a few on his neck. I bring him in real fast and start smacking and they weren't flying off. They were attached. By the time I was done I looked like I committed murder.
My question is...what should I do for him at this time and for the future to keep them off? He can't be comfortable. He is acting fine and they are leaving him alone now that he is inside. All my others only have a few bites. I feel like a horrible horse mom :(
Double check with your vet but seems I heard you could use the dog medication that goes down their back. It is for fleas and ticks but heard it works great on biting flies to. And u use once a month.

If they are that bad I would get a sheet too. Are these the bigger horse flys that suck blood? If so I would think it would be painful to have these blood suckers on you, had a few bit me and dang they hurt.

Yes. I was smashing and getting blood all over me and then picking them off. I felt so bad! Going to buy a sheet today.

Nasty boogers. I dont have a problem with them out here thank goodness, but have dealt with them before and hate the heck out of them. They hurt like the deckens. I would think a fly sheet would help quite a bit.

If u are talking about a true horse fly (the bomb. Proof prehistoric ones) I've been told to stay away from sheets because they can get under them as we'll as bite thru them. I've also heard there's not a lot to do to keep ten of ur horses... mud works lol

I have had zero luck with anything working against horse flies. They are just too big for fly spray to have any effect on them, and I won't use sheets because they can get up underneath the sheet. The only thing that works for me to is to keep mine up during the day, and let them out around 6:00 PM at night.

Darn it! I also got the stuff you can put on their back kind of like what you put on a dog and it's supposed to keep them off. I don't like to keep them out at night so I hate not being able to put him out during the day. These suckers are everywhere. On the screen on our windows...flying in the door as you open it. Hitting the windows. They are everywhere!!
I have done sheets and the flies get under the sheet and get to feed on the horses so bad they bleed through the sheets. I have some horse sheets for sale!
