So I just drove 1000 miles to try a horse. He is everything I want and more. We get along great, he's quiet, well trained, well built, and on top of that he's my dream horse looks wise. I have never met a better horse for me. He just has one flaw. I had him vet checked and she said he is a tiny bit tender in his right toe. His owner (who I really like and get good vibes from him) was shocked. I did not see it, I did not feel it, nothing. The vet said she rated it a 1 (10 being dead lame, 0 being absolutely perfect). Flexion tests did not make it worse, and she really tested out his heel and says he did not show ANY sign of it being navicular. I didn't have x-rays done bc she actually did the vet check before I rode him because of schedule issues. Now, she thinks he may just have thin soles. He does have those typical tb feet, is barefoot, and kept on crappy hard dirt. If I buy him, he'll be kept on a 40acre grassy pasture . I have an amazing farrier, and I am prepared to give him any supplements and/or shoeing/hoof care he may need. So, if you were me, would you buy?

Yes...most horses have some kind of ache or pain, as long as it is manageable, and you are an aware owner...it probably will work out fine..
Enjoy your horse!

Yep. I'd probably X-ray him though, just so you know how to shoe him in case he's showing some change in his foot somewhere. Front feet are usually a matter of good management and prevention (good shoeing). I'm glad you found such a neat horse!!

Get the extra film on the toe... and beyond that make sure you haul this horse somewhere unfamiliar as in arenas etc....  I'm just a jaded as heck and always wonder why the "great" ones are for sale... cover your butt.

i'd have her come back to xray.

Me too.

Not necessarily to determine whether or not I'm going to buy the horse, but to know where to go from there. Is there anything I should be treating, a special shoe, etc.

If that is the only thing found on the vet check, I think you're in good shape. A vet should always be able to find something.

Xrays never hurt.  But it is common for barefoot horses to come up sore from time to time, even shod horses, any horse for that matter.  And remember, sometimes vets want to find at least one thing to say isn't 100 percent because they don't want it to sound like any horse is perfect, as they are not.

Follow your gut.  Get some films.

Yep. No horse is 100% sound. I would get the xrays though like other suggested just to know what is going on to have peace of mind. But no I definitely would not let a little soreness be my deciding factor.  If anything maybe he had a stone bruise or just needs a better trim job to get him more balanced. I know flies have been horrible here so the horses have been stomping like crazy! They all seem a little more sore footed this year than ever before.

Yeah, I would probably go for it. It could be something really simple, but if concerned get some xrays or a second opinion. I haven't met a barefoot horse yet that doesn't get a little sore from time to time.

Most good vets can find SOMETHING. Get an X-ray, but I'd say it sounds like no by deal. 1 on a 10 scale? Meh.

You could x-ray to rule out laminitis/founder, etc. If x-rays are clean, I would definitely go for it. Proper farrier work and/or shoeing will likely clear things up

Have you tried to contact any board members that might know the horse or owner to get their opinion. Do you have a video that you might want a couple of the knowledgeable members to watch and see what they say?
I would want x-rays on the feet and hocks, something maybe starting but not causng problems yet
Good luck with whatever you decide

I havn't read all the posts, but I will tell you that no horse will pass 100% on a vet check.  They all have something/ache-pain, etc.  it's just a decision- if it's something that you are prepared to deal with in the future/or long term future of the horse.
