With so much talk about papers and seeing the hate towards grade horses I thought a thread with only grade horses and their accomplishments would be nice. Post pics...

This is our old freebie horse we picked up from western SD, it taught a bunch of kids how to ride throughout the years...

Here's Grimmie. He's a 3.5yo BS Paint, but due to past owner's ickiness is unregisterable. Anyway, I love him! He's got a ton of personality, curious, and wants to work.

Awesome! Love a good grade horse...kind of like cheering for the underdog
A good grade mare took me to the Canadian Finals rodeo in the 80's...bought her as a yearling, and it's amazing what a little knowledge, a lot of enthusiasim, and a good horse can do to make dreams come true!

Sage is not registred and can't be so grade I guess thanks AQHA

Ive had a few great grade horses though. My bo is a quarter horse Morgan cross, JD is a grade Paint, only one parent registred.

Theres good and bad in both worlds (regestred or not) only its easier to track the duds when you can trace lineage back. Thoes great grade horses generaly come from great grade horses, just not traceable. Im at a spot in my program with my goals I need well breed paperd horses

The best horse we own though for cattle is as mutt as they come, at the least half alberta wild horse could likely be whole!

Here's my Kate girl. Lady I got her from, got her from someone that took her from Last Chance Corral. Bought her real cheap as a 3 yr old when I was 15 to make a 4-H horse out of and boy, has she become more than that! She will do anything and go anywhere for me. She isn't the fastest horse out there but she runs and gives 100% every time. We get faster and faster every time even though we've battled hock soreness she never stopped working for me. I wish all the time I could register her and have a couple babies some day bc of how awesome she is!

We've also got a grade pony and she just stands and waits as my 2 nieces and nephew all pile on or fight about who gets on next and then off she goes with them doing everything they ask. She is so forgiving to them and soo amazing. Best money we ever spent was buying her.

I have a GORGEOUS 16 yr old cremello ( I was told he is QH when I bought him 7 yrs ago) gelding that is just AMAZING he has won me 3 belt buckles 2 of them being champion and 1 being resv. Champion, a halter, a winter blanket, a 1st place saddle, over $400 in barrel money and he has won my heart! I can go make a run on him and turn around and put my nephew on him he can go walk a run. He LOVES poles! We are learning to rope to gather. I do not know what I would do without him!!

I also have a grade paint gelding that I just got and so far so good he looks like he will hopefully (fingers crossed) that he will make a 1d/open rodeo horse!

I don't know how to load pics :(.

Here is my late great pony Bandit. He was a QH/Welsh cross. 12.3 hands and as long bodied as a 15.2 hand gelding I had.

He was a 21/22 sec pole horse and a solid open 2D barrel horse with the occasional 1D run. He was super fun.

He won me a pole saddle, several belt buckles…local stuff like that. I roached his mane and he looked like a little trojan horse.

It will only let me post one picture I love this old man he is 26 this year and still going strong he was my husbands, then mine and now passed down to my daughter who is 9 but has been riding him since she was 3 ish. Best baby sitter ever just put her on him and turn them loose. He has so much respect for her and takes care of her so well and I can hardly take it when I think of him not being with us anymore.

This is Bert, he's 7 years old and a mustang (I still count that as a mutt lol) I adopted him this year because I'm a sucker and it was the best decision of my life. Starting a 7 year old horse has it's ups and downs especially when said horse is wild to begin with but I wouldn't change one minute of it. He's gritty and athletic and never quits me. I have about 100 rides on him and have done quite a bit, he's been to shows, rodeos (just to hang out), through trails and ponied a few colts for me too.

Love this post! Here is my 21 year old mare, Whiskey. She's still kicking it in the 2D! I've had her since I was about 12 and now I'm 21 as well. Although she's on stall rest until October, I'm hoping she comes back strong! Vet thinks she tore soft tissue around her navicular bone in her front right - did x-rays, no navicular. Says he sees it often in performance horses. Anyways, I'm rambling!

ETA: Got her from a horse trader/trainer/breeder - you name it, he was it. She "had papers but they got lost". Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure. He said she has Bugs Alive in her but again, it's not proven.

The Worst Seller Ever

My first real barrel horse. (poor guy)  I got him as a yearling, borke, trained , and seasoned him.  I sold him when I had my daughter to a friend for her daughter who went on to win pretty consistanly.  Now he is carrying another youth to JR rodeo and open rodeo wins.  He won many saddles and buckles for me.  This year (2006) at the Speedhorse we were at the top of the 2D only a few tenths behind Fred.

My current "jackpot horse", she has a knack for hitting just right. She belongs to a friend of mine and I am babysitting until her grandkids get big enough to ride her.  I broke her as a baby and started her on barrels.  She also gets to babysit my little one on poles and is a heck of a breakaway horse.

My current project.  He is going to be cool with some seasoning.  He has a really cool style.

My current "rodeo horse" (I can't ride her at a barrel race to save my life).  I got lucky enough to borrow her for a couple rodeos and her owner let me keep her because we have been doing so good, winning everywhere.  He kicked himself off her because I make her go faster.  LOL

My old man, Joker, has had success at every level from 4-H county fairs to 300-horse jackpots and I'm beyond thrilled that he is still able to run at age 21. He won three straight NBHA KS02 Open 2D championships from 2009 to 2011 and still occasionally busts out a 1D run here or there. My two younger brothers and an ex-fiance have also had the pleasure of winning on him, and my sister-in-law even rode him in the county fair parade this year. He helped me qualify for URA and IRA Finals in 2012 and also won part of my IRA money last year. He's on a limited competition schedule now because of his age, but I'm looking forward to running him a little more this fall & winter when the NBHAs are back indoors. When he fully retires, he won't owe me a thing, and I'm sure he has a home at my brother & sister-in-law's place with their two 20-somethings where he can be a trail horse occasionally and stand in the pond all summer long.

Chip! I am not sure what he is but he is definitely a Heinz 57!!!! He has won me countless titles and awards.   He took me to youth world from 2005-2009.  He had the same run every time and was so much fun to run.  I miss running him every day.  Now he is fat and happy at the age somewhere around 25.  He taught me so much and I hope he can teach my daughter one day.  I could go on and on about this horse!

This guy is 35 years old in this pic.

"Shorty" doesn't have a big win record, but he litterally has given thousands of kids their first ride.  Shorty is lucky, he isn't just loved by one little girl - he's loved by many.

This is bailey. She is "grade" but is actually a granddaughter of frenchmans guy on the top side, out of an own daughter of mr. eye opener. Both parents are appendix, so she could not be registered with AQHA. I absolutely love this gal though! She will be 2 in may, picture was from april when she was still shedding her fuzzy hair!

EXCUSE ME! I don't know who you think you are but all of my horses are grade and they will beat your registered horses any day! Blue my 16 yr old grade Cermello gelding will out last any of your registered horses any day! And blue has won me 3 buckles, halter, and 2 saddles! Rooster my 12 yr old grade paint has the speed of a open/pro rodeo barrel horse and will out last your horses on a bad day! My "grade" horses are not disgusting cretins they look better than 99% of your registered horses. I am NEVER ashamed of riding MY grade horses. People like you make me so sick! I don't understand how you can be so blind! Papers don't make a horse, its the heart of the horse that matters most. I will take heart over papers any day. YOU make me soooo mad!!

So if your grade horses are so good, why are you not in the Wpra top 15?

What a bunch of disgusting cretins, you all should be ashamed to run such animals...

Oh you mean compete against adults in the open?

I know who his parents are and how he's bred but he's grade! Had him since he was a weanling, last horse I have from my parents ranch, he'll be 18 this year. Started as a head horse but quit pulling so he became my breakaway horse, pole horse, and barrel horse. Great breakaway horse, 21 second pole horse, and i'm still running barrels on him. Won the 1D in a spring series this year on him, but big shows he's a consistent 2D horse. My husband uses him to hunt off of, great babysitter, he's definitely my once in a lifetime horse!

Most of the horses I grew up on were grade. We had a kid horse called Little Man that was some kind of pony cross. He packed us all around the ranch. We had a black mustang pony too called Tar. My sister's and my first horse was a grade paint ranch gelding named Rocket. He treated us well. That being said, I don't own one currently that isn't registered. I anticipate having some that are grade when my husband and I have kids again as mutts seem to make great kid ponies. A good horse is a good horse. I appreciate both but I'm not going to breed a grade one either though I might give one a home.

Agree with you totally! Only reason mine is grade is because I was lazy! Sometimes you know from the moment they hit the ground that they are special and are not going anywhere. When we weaned him, we locked him in one of the stalls to be halter broke the next day. There was a five gallon drum in there, can't remember why, but when we went out to feed the next morning he was down on his knees trying to cut that barrel, he would stick his head in it and sling it across the stall and then try cutting it as it bounced off the walls, I claimed him that day... (Dad has tried for years to get me to trade him so he could have him back) Sorry I could go on and on with some of the stories on him...

This is hubbys gelding, Roper. He was and, could still be, a knock up head horse. He is in the neighborhood of 13-16 years old. He is a roarer but will not give up till the job is done. He is supposedly Poco Bueno bred. I've taken him thru the pattern a few times, and with absoloutely no training, he hits in the high 19's. He is smooth as a cadillac for hubby, gentle as a dog to throw our daughter up on, and high spirited enough for me to have fun with. He has earned his stay. Can't forsee him ever leaving.

I'm not in top 15 because I can't haul right now but I have the horse power. I do compete against adults thank you very much and I beat them to. I did not realize at the time that it was meant as a joke so excuse me for not liking my horses getting trashed. Have a nice weekend :).

This is my mutt!  Just bought him Monday.  Both parents are appendix so he is not registered, he is a grandson of Frenchman's Guy.  The seller owned both parents, has sold the mare but still owns the stud,  he was an accidental breeding.   I have all the info to get him registered but don't know if I will or actually can- the seller said she has enough ROM points on the stud.   He is little, 14.3, seems to have a great mind for a green 5 year old.   I have 3 big 1D horses that I have dumbed down to 3D so was not looking to buy more horse than I can ride.  He is compact, short back but I hope he can be 3D. I was able to bring him home to try him.  I wanted an easy going horse and he won me over going through obstacles like he has does them every day.  I will send him to Jan Powell to put on barrels.

Young lady, you should be admitting you made a mistake instead of childishly carrying on. I myself have had to apologize for misreading a post. Sometimes it hard to read humor/sarcasm on the computer. People on here are usually very forgiving if you have the maturity to admit when you are wrong.
