Location: Montana | Something that sits you deep, doesn't throw you forward? Should I be looking at a certain type of saddle? Or something with more forward hung stirrups? Not necessarily looking for a saddle that makes you cheat and just causes you to sit down, just looking for something that when I'm going fast I feel secure in. I currently ride in a Courts, have ridden a Circle Y before...didn't notice it with the Circle Y but wasn't going as fast then as I am now. Just looking for opinions. :) |

| Caldwell ( rocket tree) for sure they are expensive but by far the best saddle I have ever ridden in and I have ridden in many- the Shiloh contender Jordan Peterson is pretty good too and less expensive but I would save my $ and by a Caldwell rocket tree every time! |

| One with a big enough seat. If your seat is too small you can not get your feet forward in any saddle.

| I'm not a fan of forward hung stirrups. If you do need to move your body forward to help your horse leave a barrel you cannot. Plus to me I always feel like I'm going out the back. I bought a Caldwell and LOVE it! I stay balanced in the middle of my horse and I can stay sitting down. When I need to move into a forward seat I can do so without my legs going backward or forward. Just my opinion though! |

Location: Montana | I have been working with the stirrups...when I was at the trainer she set them shorter than I had been used to riding in...I definitely feel more balanced since she has done that. I had tried a notch shorter since then as she thought it might be better yet, but I have lengthened them out again to where she had them set. I've thought about seat size as well...last year I went to a 14" as the 15" I had been riding in left me too much room, if that makes sense. I really like my saddle, it is the same brand my trainer uses, but my horse is really ratey, so when she rates down for the barrel, some days I feel like I'm going right off the front. But if I'm going to try a different saddle no matter if it is the seat size or whatever I need to change, I guess you could say I want to ensure my bet by finding something that works. |

Sounds like your feet are getting to far behind you and throws you off balance. What brand of saddle are you using now? |

I'm using a Courts brand saddle, and you are exactly right, my feet are getting too far behind me. I can post a video from last night...we did better than the previous time when I did almost go off, but my feet get too far behind and I'm starting to lose my stirrups (usually my left one). I need to change something as currently we are clocking just under 3 seconds off the fastest time, and as we get faster I can't envision things working out for the better. |

Location: where the wind blows | I agree with the rest on Caldwell. I tried about every saddle out there. Drove my poor husband crazy buying and selling. Finally bought a used Caldwell Rocket and what a difference. I ride fairly forward from my english horse show days and I found most barrel saddles put you forward. Caldwell lets me sit where I need to be in the turn. I won't buy anything else now. Bought a second used one a Caldwell Max and it's great too. They each fit horses a bit different. Saving my pennies for a new one some day. Ps - had a Triple Creek too - no comparison to a Caldwell at all. I suggest trying to find a used one first they are around you just have to be patient in searching. I'd talk to Charon at Caldwell first too to figure out fit for your horse on tree. |

I agree with Della on trying a Martha Josey, I really like my Caldwell and Pozzi's, but they are really pricey, but if money is tight I would try out a Martha Josey, had a few of these and really liked them. I dont like the newer ones, the older ones are built really to last.. |

| I asked basically the same thing a week or so ago as the mare I am now riding is 2-3" shorter in the front than the back and on top of that she is very front endy in her turns. She is 19 and set in her ways so changing HER is not an option.
I have never been so UNbalanced on a horse in my life! I have to constantly remind myself to sit back and she/saddle put me forward of my center. Feels like I am tenuous all the time when I ride her. Am looking for something where the seat is adjusted for her "slope". I borrowed a girl's saddle that she said had forward hung stirrups and they were STILL behind me. Grrrrrr! To top it of it had a deep seat with a high cantle which almost crippled me. I have always ridden a flatter seat. If I get set back I can jump my body forward, but if stuck in one place my poor lower back pays the price (my L5 vertebrae is slide forward 20-30% as the little tabs that hold it place are missing). Tried a Caldwell once and it crippled me just riding in it and tried to make a run at half speed....never again. I know that lots of people love them but they are not for me. Have a MJ lined out to try on her this weekend but not holding my breath. Custom made would be nice but I need something NOW! Have placed once already on her and would have placed at several if I could just stay where I supposed to! |

Location: Montana | Thanks...I have looked a little at the Caldwells and the Double J's and the Crown C's, and I really love the looks of them but I darned near would need an oil well to afford one right now, LOL. My friend has a Caldwell and loves it because it doesn't throw her forward and she won't ride in anything different (her horse is built down hill...my mare is built a little on the down hill side but she can turn!). Will definitely take a look at Martha Josey's. I haven't been unbalanced like this before either...but I think as we get to going faster and turning tighter, it just emphasizes it more. And I've been trying to do a little more bareback riding, but not helping yet. Danke scheon everyone!

Hands down. Great quality saddle, Kari is great to work with! They're super comfy, and gorgeous to boot!
Jean Withers rides in one now, I don't think she'll over go back to anything else! You want to talk about a hard horse to ride too!

| I not only need something that will throw me forward but actually help me in the opposite direction lol. This unbalanced thing is costing me paychecks. We are RIGHT THERE, out of the money at several rodeos pretty consistently and if I wasn't all over the place, throwing my little mare off balance, we would be IN the money. It doesn't help that she is little and I am not.
And I have another rodeo tomorrow. If I could find a saddle we can both live with I would be going even more than I am now. .......and I wanna go!

Martins have been the worst to make me feel flung forward....only brand I've ever had issues with getting my feet behind me. (I've had more than one of them) |

Location: NE Texas | I really like my Jeff Smith cutter. It's single skirted with in skirt rigging, but built just like one of his cutting saddles only with a 15" seat. Sits great with a nice pocket, fenders hung in the appropriate position, fits my horses, great, and really puts me in the right place.

A quick and way cheaper alternative may be to bring your saddle to a person who does tack repair and have them hobble your stirrups so they cannot go behind you. This will give you a chance to see if this helps you before you invest into a new saddle. |

But as with everything, some things work for some people, other things work for other people. Thanks all! |

I'm honestly not ruling anything...I've been thinking about going back to my old pad as I have had trouble with bridging with my new pad lately. The newest picture I have with a saddle on her is from last year with her old pad. I know something is amiss, and I will not rule anything out, but I know something has to change. It would be simpler if I could just win the lottery then I could afford all types of everything to try at any convenience I like. LOL. |
