Thanks for all the kind words, hubby called the Sheriff and a deputy did come out to write up a report, theres not anything we can do because we live out in the country and lots of open land and lots of gun happy people all around us, so we cant say who did it, we have lots of pochers out here so no telling her shot her. So I wanted a report on this so just in case something does come up. Poor old thing she was going so good for her age and then this happens. This must have happen last night. |

You know there was not much damage at all just a hole where the bullet went in and where it came out is where the bone peices were. I didnt want to look cause I thought that she must have got hung up in the fence somewhere when I saw the blood by the water tank, didnt want to see the mess but took a tiny peek at her leg and saw no damage like what I would have thought , just the hole on either side. So then I took a harder look and saw what i thought and called hubby and deputy and they saw and told me that she was shot.. her tibia area was all swelled up, call vet to ask question and he said all the damage was on the inside. Thats why it had swelled the way it did, the bone was shatter. |

Well, at least she got to live out her life with someone wonderful and caring like you. She could have died a long time ago if it wasn't for you and your care for her. |

This didn't happen to Roxie.. It happened to Pattie... I'm sorry but I'm the kind of person that would follow the blood trail back to where it started.... I promise you the bullet didn't go very far after it exited... I'd darn well find it and have the police enter the ballistics results into the nation-wide system.... It's a darn shame this horse lived 43 years only to be killed this way.. Kudos to Roxie for helping her to live this long. I know of at least one animal that will be waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge... |

I understand it happened to Pattie Komet and forgive me if I didn't post my words just right. But it also happened to Roxie because she was Pattie's caregiver. Sorry but my three "babies" that I have lost in the last 9 months happened to me also. I cry almost every day when I think about them. So sorry but I feel like "it happened to me too." My chemo brain doesn't always allow me to say absolutely the right thing. But it is getting better. And I think you made a good point of following the blood trail I hadn't thought about that. I would try my hardest to find the bullet and see what comes of it.

'SRH... I KNOW you didn't mean anything wrong in your post.... and I didn't mean to jump on you... and I know the police in Texas have bigger problems to investigate than something like this... But to get a horse to that age only to have it die like this!!! She came up to the front looking for help... Had to hobble on three legs all the way... I'd have blood in my eye for the irresponsible shooter... |

After Sterling went with her daddy, we got the backhoe from our neighbor so we could bury Patty in the back. Didnt want to do this with Sterling so it was a long afternoon for me of waiting to get things done. And then got on the Gator and went looking. Edit to add: thanks Komet I do love my critters, just wish I would have found her sooner.

I think we all have lost something that we love and try out darnest to take care of. Hugs to all my BB's for all the kind words. Well.. We all know how much you love your critters.... I don't doubt you did everything you could... I didn't know about the rain. (which would have washed the blood away ) It didnt rain real hard just a pop up shower that we didnt expect, if I knew it was going to shower I would have gone out earlier, but having a 5 year old grandbaby with me and the heat was horrible today and didnt want to get Sterling out in it and I worry about the rattlesnakes out here so it really slowed me down on doing what I was wanting to do all day long.
You certainly should not "beat yourself up" over the acts of an stupid and irresponsible hunter. You loved that horse with all your heart and took care of her the BEST you ever could. I wish I was closer to wrap my arms around you for a big HUG and shed a few tears with you....... |

We have gun poppers out here all the time and I stay in a state of fear wondering when one of mine will be hurt from it. It angers me because they (hunters) KNOW they are on someone else's property and they have no regard for that. Lifting you up in prayer today. |

Location: Bandera, TX | My sympathy on your loss. We had a nice mare that had a baby on her side and due to be checked when my nephew found her. We were having poaching problems at the time. After that we stopped putting horses up in the hiway pastures. Poacher was later caught killing a buffalo. While serving a little time in Huntsville-he made a successful 3 day jail break was caught again and got an additional 50 tacked on. Idiot should be there for awhile. I don't care if they were hog hunting...you should know what your target is! |

Exactly. I've never been hunting...so far the extent of my gun experience has been BB/pellet guns. But my Dad drilled into me that you NEVER pull the trigger unless you are SURE of what you are aiming at.
Roxie - so many (((hugs))) for you...bless you for giving Patty such awesome golden years. |

Thank you all for your kind words about Patty . And I agree a true hunter knows when to shot, but I am sure someone was poaching out here and they shot my mare, to me a poacher is not a hunter just a low down no good poacher, and we are getting the word out about this, so hopefully another poacher will do some sniching. |

So glad to know he was here in Huntsville. Ugh. Irresponsible hunter/poachers need to be educated in in how far their bullets travel if target is missed. To me that is as important as being careful about where you are aiming. And also some guns are so powerful the bullet goes right through what they are shooting and hits something else. I just hope someone has the good sense to squeal on the person that did this. |

I agree a bullet coming from a high powered rifle will keep traveling even after it hits its target, I was so hurt and sad yesterday, but now I'm starting to get mad. Going to start calling neightbors around us and letting them know what happen. |

Thank you,,, I'm better now, I was just so sick thinking about this all day yesterday, I had a headache from being so uptight and my teeth hurt. Still sick about this, but now I'm getting really mad, have called a few people that knows people out here and just getting the word out about this, hopping someone will do some sniching. I started to shred the back pasture hopping it will discourage the wild hogs from getting on my land, trying to get it more open feeling. Maybe it will help keep the poachers outa here for a while, oh well I can only hope right? Thank you to all my BB's once again, you guys are great |

I'm not trying to start a fight here.... But as a hunter and an avid gun user... The target is not the only thing you need to think about.... Unless you are using a very low caliber round, You need to expect the bullet will punch through your target and keep flying.. (which I believe happened here) You HAVE to be aware of what is on the other side of your target. |

Location: North MS | I would call the local tv news and the newspaper as well. The public needs made aware of the problem and to help educate younger hunters who may have never thought about where the "missed" bullet goes. Or they could have been taught to hunt by an unethical hunter. I believe her age definitely would make this a special interest story to catch readers eyes and you may flush out a nervous hunter. Just mention that game camera photos are being reviewed. |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | It is so sad when something like this happens. It is just senseless. We lost a fawn colored yearling heifer that we planned to keep to the same thing. We found her dead next the fence (by the road). She had a clean shot in the head. Not sure what they were thinking unless they thought she was a deer (almost same color). |
