| The article I read said death by asphyxiation suspected suicide...meaning he hung himself? So hard to believe and so sad. Apparently he struggled with both depression and substance abuse throughout his life. So often we hear this with comedians which makes me think of the song, "Tears of a Clown." Often the biggest smiles come from those that are hurting the most. RIP Robin. |

Location: CTX | Such a loss. I actually had the honor of meeting him while I was deployed. And he was such a nice, down to earth and friendly person. He truly was interested in us. We were having a late diner in the defac, and he was there too, he sad down with us and we talked for about 20 mins. I remember a friend getting a phone call from our base back home and he told the other guy, "you never believe who is sitting at our table" well of course he didn't believe it, so Robin grabbed the phone and started talking to the guy. We had to email pics and only after he saw those he believed he talked to Robin. Later that evening Robin performed on stage for the troops. Totally awesome! The world got a little darker in my opinion with his passing. RIP Robin, hopefully you now have the peace and quiet you longed for.

So many great works. He just could spontaneously make people laugh at almost anything. He was fantastic in movies like Good Morning VietNam and Ms Doubtfire. Gosh, what about Good Will Hunting? Now I just want to sit down and watch his movies. |

| This hits hard. I wonder what it must be like to spend so much time being someone else and people ask you constantly about roles that you played that weren't you. I wonder if he just wanted someone to care about him and not the fame. Okay, I'm rambling but the sheer magnitude of sadness it must take in order to do this, overwhelms me. RIP...I pray you found peace. |

I believe a lot of really engaging actors and comedians do suffer from this; its one of the things that makes them so good. They can go sooo high and take us with them. Unfortunately, once they are alone they generally tend to fall pretty hard. A lot of them struggle with destructive behaviors like drug addiction and alcoholism too. It's soo sad.

I agree. I suppose the reason why some of his best work was playing serious roles, because that just came natural to him. I would imagine that those roles came close to being a reflection of his true inner persona. He was different than most other comedians in this way, I think. "Tears of a Clown" will be playing in my head for a few days, no doubt. This hit me hard. I hope that his death won't be in vain and it will go a long ways toward a renewed focus on just how devastating and far reaching serious depression can be. Just throwing a random drug at it isn't the answer, yet that's what happens all too often......this is one of the potential consequences. I think serious depression is in adequately treated.....often by people who have no business treating it. Just my personal opinion. |

My cousin is the little girl without hair on the left, my aunt is the lady with a shaved head, and on the far right in the yellow shirt is my other cousin.
The biggest thing you will hear about Robin Williams is that he LOVED everyone. He genuinely cared about every person he met. What a legacy to leave.

A lot of the stuff he did in that movie was off-the-cuff improvisation... Something he excelled at of course.. His inspiration and hero was Johnathon Winters... Who just died last year... Here they are together on a short 60 minutes clip...

I loved reading your story about him. I've heard that an alcoholic who goes straight for a number of years and then goes back to the booze has a very slim chance of living- seems that this is what did him in- and I don't blame him. It's taken lots of others down as well- |

The movie came out very close to that day that my best friend had committed suicide-1998. I had never gone to the movies by myself but my pain that day was unbearable and I just had to be alone. I sat in the very back and just cried my heart out. In another sense it was so cathartic. I plan on pulling out this movie that I have not seen in several years and remember my bestest friend and Robin. May they both rest in peace. |

Robin Williams... as a robot in Bicentennial Man was, in court, denied the right to be called Human because he was immortal due to his positronic brain. Then appearing back in the same court many years later after having himself modified to grow old and die, he was granted a place in humanity and had his marriage to the woman he loved declared valid.
I find it ironic that after seeking death on his own terms he will remain immortal due to his lifetime of outstanding work. |

Location: California | in the '80s. I'm dancing at the City Disco in San Francisco off of Broadway. There he is staring at us a few feet away. He was hiding between the pillar and a potted plant in the dark. I asked him why was he hiding and he just looked at me with this manic grin. My friend Cindy asked for his autograph and he obliged. She then asked him to dance. So here he is dancing next to me and I'm not exaggerating when I say he was the worst I had ever seen. It was crazy dancing. I didn't know if he was high or just nuts. Super nice guy but it was just weird how he was hiding and staring. Reminded me of a kid who had no friends and watching other kids play. He was way too young to leave. I am still shocked but not surprised. Poor guy. He gave so much and was so kind. A tragic loss. |

Location: Midwest | Because I love Lewis Black, I will post this as well. Lewis and Robin did several USO tours together and became friends.
Lewis Black Remembers Robin Williams: He Was “On Another Level”
Lewis Black and Robin WilliamsKevin Winter—Getty Images Williams was as smart as he was funny, the comic says Contrary to popular belief, Robin Williams, who died Monday at the age of 63, wasn’t “always on” and going a mile a minute. But comedian Lewis Black says Williams’ ability to jump from one topic to another was unparalleled among his peers. Here, Black remembers Williams as an endlessly giving and energetic person: “I had met him before, but I really got to know him when we went on two USO [United Service Organization] tours together [in the late 2000s], and spent time with him on the film Man of the Year. The first thing was: I got on a plane with him, and he was reading a book which was a history of Iraq. He sat there and talked about it for 35 minutes, going through the history of Iraq with us. That’s astonishing. I thought, this guy is kind of brilliant. He was a really bright guy who may have had a photographic memory. [Trying to figure out how he does what he does] is like standing in front of a hurricane and going, gee, I wonder how that happened. He wasn’t someone who was always on. It’s very much a misconception. There were jokes of his that made me laugh hard, but it was the going from one thing to another, making those connections. It’s like how you watch an improv group take suggestions. It was like Robin had the most brilliant audience inside his head throwing out suggestions, because he would put combinations together that were just crazy. And how he could work out of the moment. That working out of the moment is a gift, but he did it on another level. [On the USO tours], the amount of energy he brought when we would get off of a helicopter and walk towards the troops — the amount of energy he gave to them was unbelievable. It was really incredible to be in that kind of giving presence. I was exhausted. We’re going from place to place, he can’t give enough to them, and I’m trying to think, ‘Where can I take a nap?’ It was inspiring. Wherever we’d land, until the point where we would leave, he’d be talking to them — and not just going off, but being straight with them. I adored him. If you look at the outpouring that’s gone on, that someone of his stature would come to see them was kind of amazing to them. It’s proof again that the good die young, and pricks live forever. He’s gonna be missed. There’s a hole, and it’s gonna take a long time to be filled.” |
