Location: Missouri | According to my vet, they are less likely to choke on oats b/c they do not pack in the esophagus like pelleted feed. However, my mare choked on them and it was one of the worst of her choking episodes. A horse that is prone to choke should be scoped to see what the cause is, but other than feeding issues and possible inhalation leading to pneumonia, I don't know of any other problems that it would cause. Well, death. If not treated. But that's obvious, right?
Re-reading your post, my assumption would be that adding oats to the horse's soaked mash (pelleted feed in water) might be enough to cause it to choke. This would have been the case with my bad choker anyway... |
