So I took my barrel pony into the vet today to try to figure out his turning problem. Since I bought him (February), he was unable to make his right hand turns no matter how many times we practiced big circles that direction - he would just jump sideways, swing his butt out, start bucking & rearing, etc. (We had a chiropractor check him out and he was fine.) The vet took a look at him & said he has inflammation in his distal hock (which is the joint right below the hock). He said the only treatment option is to inject it.

Has anyone else ever dealt with this problem before? I am not a fan of injections, and just wondered if anyone has had any other treatment options work or help lengthen time between injections? I planned on getting Back On Track hock boots, but they don't come in a small enough size. I checked magnetic therapies too, but nothing. Wondered if there was any poultice, cream, etc that may help?

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest the adequan regime, and look at giving glucosamine Im weekly, the adequan may promote cartilage regeneration, the glucosamine will help reduce inflammation.

I would suggest finding an oral suppliment that works for your horse, two I like are tight joint plus, and Lubrysin.

The joint you are referring to is the tarsometatarsal joint, usually abbreviated TMT. It's the most commonly injected joint in the hock. The next one is the Distal Intertarsal joint. I wouldn't be worried about injecting either one. Some vets just inject the TMT, some always inject both the DIT and the TMT joint.

Where do you get you oral supplements from?

Tight joint plus google the name and their website comes up.

Lubrysin, you can go onto their main website and call them, they can direct you to the nearest dealer.

Most supplements you can buy over the Internet, some you can buy through the local tack store.

Valley vet, stateline tack all have a good variety.

If you look at the barrel horse world webpage there are advertisers that sell joint product.

Good luck as it can be very overwhelming

I use Total Health Enhancement Joint & Arthritis (mixed with my MM), Pentosan Gold, ECJR and joint injections as needed for my mare with stifle issues (spur).

And Total Health Enhancement NitrOxide, Previcox, Pentosan Gold, joint injections as needed and PHT bell boots for my navicular mare.

I give MSM to my 3yo for preventative.

I don't currently have a horse with hock issues (knock on wood) but if I did I would probably go with whatever THE sup Bob recommends, ECJR if I could afford it, Pentosan Gold and BOT or PHT hock boots.

I have the BOT hock boots and have used them before but I don't have a horse with issues so I can't tell you how much good they do. I can tell you from experience the BOT quick wraps work wonders so I assume the hock wraps should to.
