I have noticed that my mare has been getting white hairs showing up on her left side where the saddle D is. It is covered by the pad and I don't have any dry spots under the saddle on her back anywhere. I have been noticing a saddle sore about 1/3 of the way down her rib cage where the saddle D is at. I am riding in a Meleta Brown new freedom saddle with a 3/4" 5 star pad. And I'm wondering if because it's 3/4 rigging that it's just hitting a "fresh" spot instead of the usual places that the saddle rigging hits a horse. She isn't cranky at all to work she works to both sides great. Any suggestions on what I can do to protect her from being rubbed by the saddle rigging? Thanks in advance.

Make sure the rivets are not pulling out of the D ring and causing it to rub.

Thanks, I'll look at that tonight. I've never had to deal with saddle sores there before, so this one has me stumped.

Last night I checked my saddle and everything is in tack and nothing poking out and rubbing. So I'm back to being stumped on the odd spot for a saddle sore. Hmmm.

Are you sure the cinch ring is not rubbing her, check that.

It's too high to be the cinch ring. It's the actual D ring off of the saddle. And it's covered with the pad. I've been looking in the interweb and it's obviously rubbing but I'm wondering if the saddle isn't shifting just a touch or if I have too thick of a pad on her, I might have to go to a 1/2" or a different pad all together. The saddle fits her up top just fine but this spot on her side has me stumped. LOL!!! Sometimes, I just wish they could talk.

I'll post a picture tonight when I get home from work. I don't have any on my phone. Which is amazing because I usually have pics of this kind of stuff. LOL!!

I'm just trying to picture it, so the d ring from the saddle is over the pad right? Or pad is under it. But any way could your pad be to thick and causing pressure in that one spot, or could the d be bent to far in? I had a older double J and the D's were digging into my horses side, it was built that way and I hated it so sold the saddle, I think the saddle was for a more narrow horse so the d's were slanted more inward.

I just bought a new meleta brown. It fits perfect except in that spot. the D's set on top of the pad as so they aren't touching my mare's sides at all. And after every ride there is a welt about the size of a half dollar where the D's set that are attached to saddle itself and she's starting to show white hairs. I've checked to see if it's not poking anywhere and the D's are not bent in or anything like that. I'll post pictures of it later. She is cinchy when you saddle her up (duh), but she works great. And she' doesn't have ulcers and she is chiro'd regular so I know it's the saddle being a pain in the butt. LOL!!

Turn the saddle up on the horn and look down on the D. wonder if it was sewn in a little tipped in?? Weird too that it's only one side and not the other. May have to try a 1/2" pad. I ride a really, really big horse and no issues on him. Is his left side bigger than the right??

One more thing - try running your hand under both sides and that may answer your question too with and without a pad. Let me know what you find!

I'm just wondering if maybe your mare is built up more on that one side? This is so odd, I'm really curious as to why only one side..Cant wait to see pictures, have a picture showing us without saddle and with saddle pointing out where the sore is.
