Location: St James,MN | Here is my situation. I work a lot. And I spend a lot of time doing chores. I have a nice breeding program.Lots of foundation bred horses.and one older barrel horse that iI still run occasionally. My questions are:Is there honest people to trade young horses for older horse?I want to compete more than I am now. So I'm not doing justice for anything right nowIs there people that trade riding for good bred horses?I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. I have nice horses - but I can't seem to finish anything. Thanks in advance |

Location: Deep South | I'm a little confused as to what you want to do.
Are you wanting to trade your prospects for a finished horse?
Or are you wanting to trade a prospect for someone to come put riding time on your other prospects them? (As in the prospect be their payment for the riding)
Or are you saying you are open to both of these options?
There are people in my area that do both of these. Honest people that it has worked out well for both parties. Unfortunately I am a long ways from you.

I'm open to just about anything. But my goal is to be able to compete more. |

Location: North Dakota | I have no idea how many horses you have, but, downsize the amount of mares to the extremely good ones only. Take what you can get on the others-maybe if they are bred, you will get more for them-especially with winter coming on take into consideration what you will pay to feed them?? As far as your foals, pick one or two of the BEST you have every year, work with them and send them to someone you trust and that will possibly advertise a little for you, keep the best one for yourself, (sell the other to help with the better ones continuing education) within 4- 5 years you should have to make a decision regarding if you are going to ride them OR send them to be rode for futurities etc. I have a friend that has some really nice horses but doesn't have one ready for herself. I think part of their problem is the sheer amount of horses they have around makes it hard for them to create their own good horses to ride. (plus they have kids they are trying to get to youth rodeo's) So utilize the value of the others to help fund and get you a "ready made" horse. Seriously, I bought a hardly handled 2 year old from her-when she had plenty of others that were older around and my horse is competing before hers! Time/money/crappy situations have limited her and her wants. I would say that if you throw out your horses for trade (which I don't htink I would do but I'm not in the breeding business) be open minded to pricing. Maybe PM a few breeders around that ARE competing and learn from them?? I always think, what is the use of all that nice horse flesh when the owners aren't the ones riding them?? Isn't that what you wanted when you first started?? |

I love your answer and wisdom.
OP, I'm in a circumstance very near to yours. I've decided to put my family first and sell my best horses and just save a few foals back to piddle with if I have the time. I have no time to be on the road (and when I've gone out something has called me back the last few times.) Your however a little different than I. You want to be out there so I would sell the breeding stock and make sure your on the backs of two horses that can produce results and keep you in the money. Just remember to use wisely your talents! |
