I'm a Special Education/Elementary teacher too. I have taught in CA, OK and now CO.
Teaching in OK was tough financially. I make almost twice as much in CO...
BUT and I mean BUT teaching school in OK was much, much, much, much better than teaching in CA and/or CO. I think teaching as a whole is getting to be a tough job period. But in OK I still felt respected and appreciated as a professional.
Be careful where you go, if you go.

I teach in NW Arkansas in one of the highest paying school districts in the state.  NW Arkansas is the only place I would teach in in Arkansas, though- Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale and Fayetteville are all top paying school districts that treat their teachers well.  My SIL teaches in Oklahoma and after listening to her I would say I wouldn't teach there if I didn't have to!  LOL!

I hear you loud and clear! I spent 13 years in an Oklahoma classroom. I truly loved teaching, but NOT what it has become. I left the classroom 6 years ago for the other most thankless job in the world...that of a child welfare social worker! Granted, I DO NOT work for OKDHS and make a great deal more than I did teaching.

Don't come to Florida, no tenure, low pay, mountians of standardized testing, and even keeping your certificate is based on your student test scores.  As far as Dept Of Justice and/or Dept. of Juvenile Justice goes, that depends on the prison.  The local DOJ and DJJ jobs are great, no discipline problems there.  You have a guard with you in the room.  But I had a friend teach DJJ in North Carolina and she said it was down right dangerous.

I graduated from Arkansas 29 years ago, taught one year there and headed to Texas. Absence of a state tax alone added a lot to my paycheck.
I am still in Texas and making about $60,000 a year. Districts vary quite a bit on pay and insurance allowance so check that out. Might want to tackle the certification exams ahead of time. Some areas are tough to pass. Teaching contract consists of 187 days. Jobs are not extremely plentiful unless you are bilingual.
