Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | So our 12 week old lab pup is ALWAYS thirsty! Seems like a lot more lately. I used to let him out usually about 2 times in the night and then SO takes him out at 6 when he leaves for work and that was just bc I felt he needed to go out. Now, since he has been drinking a lot I am taking him out many times a night and he wakes up panting and crying bc he is thirsty! He is also peeing a ton of course...he will drink and a few minutes later has to go. We could be outside for 15 minutes and see him pee at least 3 times! We haven't changed his food. We used to not let him drink before bed so he didn't have to go as much in the night but I feel cruel not letting him drink when he really seems like he needs it. My aunts dog is diabetic and was acting like this but she was gaining weight too. What could this be? Is this normal and I'm just overreacting? |

Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | I just wanted to make sure it wasn't normal before I took him. Definitely going to call today and make an appointment. I guess you can get him tested...my aunts dog was gaining weight and it was like she just couldn't get enough to drink. My nights are so long and I can't keep doing it but I feel bad and let him drink. |

| Have him tested for diabetes. Barring that - he's a 12 week old puppy that was used to drinking all the time, anytime he wanted. Having a puppy is like having a baby in the house. Ours is now almost 6 months old and he still gets up at least once in the night to go outside and do his business. Good luck. |

Location: ND--it snows, it floods, it snows, it floods | I agree a vet check is needed. Also, where is his kennel at? Is there good air movement or is he getting hot or over heated? If everything checks out at the vet it may be something as easy as moving his kennel or putting a fan not directly on the kennel but giving him some cool air movement. |

That could possibly be it!! He gets hot very easily and likes to sit on the air vents most of the time. His kennel is in the corner of our room between the wall and our bed. I still think I will take him to the vet. This isn't something that he has done from the beginning. This has happened in the last week or 2 and we've had him almost 7 weeks. Up until this week he handled going out 2x a night well and didn't have accidents and now he is whining to go out 5 or 6 if not more and runs to get a drink! |

Were his parents Clear on EIC (Exercise induced Collaspe). Possibly something to think about if he's going to be a hunter. |

We have all kinds of paperwork on his parents about everything they have been tested for and all that and it didn't say they had anything like that. Both his mom and dad are very good hunters and have competed at high levels.

Just remember that EIC is a recessive trait so if both parents are carriers he should be tested for it just as a precaution on your part.
ETA--his daddy is a good looking boy and I bet yours will be a handsome fella too.

Thank you! I'm going to check out all the papers I have tonight to make sure again. I'm also going to move his crate to a different location to see if it helps. That would definitely make sense that he is getting hot bc of lack of airflow. Doesn't seem to be as bad during the day. If not we will he at the vet ASAP.

Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | UPDATE: we moved his crate to the end of our bed, directly under the ceiling fan and he was great all night. Didn't whine or cry or wake up panting or mad dash it to the kitchen to drink a whole bowl of water...he went out like normal and went back to bed. That makes me feel a little better now lol |

Location: Sunny California | I've had two dog like that. One was an aussie and the other my standard poodle. I had to end of putting a fan on them when they were pups because they would get so hot at night. I don't have to do it anymore though since they don't sleep in the crate anymore and can move to where it's cooler. |
