Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | I had a post a while back about this but I can't find it. I've never flew so I have no idea about anything. I was told to try to pack everything in my carry on bag. I'll be there for 3 days. I can pack everything in my back pack I used for school but would that be too big? Also I saw where some places you can't bring like perfume and hair spray but others says you can't. Is this true? Is there any particular seats that are better than others? I will fly from a local airport to Atlanta. I'll have a hour 45min before my other flight to where I'm going. Is that enough time? Another thing I'm reading on the Internet is about the X-ray scanners. Are they as bad as people make them put to be? Is there a way to opt out but not have to do a pat down?

An hour and 45 minutes is plenty of time to make a connecting flight. The x-ray machines are not bad. You do not get patted down unless you are carrying something on you that is illegal.

Location: ND--it snows, it floods, it snows, it floods | For liquids in carry-on luggage the rule is 3-1-1 which means liquids, gels, or aerosols in containers less then 3.4 oz, in a 1 qt. clear bag and only 1 such bag per passenger. If I'm going for a long weekend or something like that I do not check my luggage I have a small suitcase that fits in the overhead bins that I carry one along with my purse which is really a larger messanger type bag for air travel that I can fit my iPad, kindle, iPod, identification, medication, glasses and contact case ect in. I will normally go to Target or Wal-Mart and buy the travel size shampoo, conditioner, ect. for my clear bag and then leave it at the hotel. If I'm only going for a couple nights I don't even bother with the travel shampoo/conditioner because I just use the hotels. I don't worry about a curling iron or anything like that either. If worse comes to worse I can always find a drugstore to buy small bottles of hair product to leave...it sucks but it makes traveling easier as well. A hour and a half between flights should be plenty long and if you have a smartphone get the airlines app. which will help with gates and what not. |

Location: ND--it snows, it floods, it snows, it floods | Also DRESS ACCORDINGLY...meaning wear shoes plus socks unless you want to walk through security barefoot (I can't believe the people that do that) and wear minimal jewlery. I normally take my earrings and necklace along in my carryon and put on after security. I wear my watch and ring which I take off and put in the tub but that's it. It amazes me at what people (mainly women) wear in accessories that have to be taken off to go through security. |

Yes you can still be randomly selected but if that's the case you normally get through quicker because you'll go through a different line. |

Location: Idahome | Agreed with the other posts. If you can fit everything in a carry on, it is nice not having to wonder if your bag made it. I don't understand those that wear flip flops or even high heels to fly in. If there is an emergency, how the hell are you going to run? I always wear tennis shoes to fly. Where is your layover? Most airports are pretty easy to get around and you should have plenty of time to make your connection. |

Yes you can but look at your boarding pass if it has SSSS I think bottom left corner you will get search. I always use to get that……but Im traveling on a european passport so its probably a higher chance to get search. |

Yeah you MAY get patted down. Has happened to me 3 times. I set the alarm off walking thru the scanner and then the hand held thing they wave over you as well from the rod in my leg.
I was the lucky recipient of a super personal under the boob - all they way up in the crotch pat down. |

As someone else stated -- wear shoes and socks. You do not want to walk barefoot in the airport. Nasty. Also, it's a good idea to wear good fitting shoes anyway in case you had to make an emergency exit from the plane. Running around in flip flops trying to get off a plane quickly is NOT smart. Besides - airports and airplanes are just not clean. Carry wipes with you so you can wipe down the tray and everything else. Don't touch that seat pocket. Wash your hands every chance you get. A back pack is okay to carry on and will fit in the overhead luggage bin (above your seat). You can carry on the back pack and your purse. Purse would stow under the seat in front of you for takeoff and landing. Make sure it's one you can zip up so nothing flies out of it and disappears at landing when the plane brakes. Clean out your purse before the trip and take only what you need for the trip. |

All liquids have to be in 3oz or less containers and all of those 3oz or less containers need to fit in a quart sized ziplock bag. |

I was the lucky recipient of a "pat down" too and I most certainly wasn't carrying anything illegal! - YES, it is a random selection and EVERYBODY and their DOG is included. |

I wear boots...they are easy to slip on and off...no laces. And I try to wear funny socks with flamingoes or monkeys or something. Just because.
Wear or bring a sweater/cardigan/zippered light jacket..something. You need to have a layer to add or take off. If plane sits on tarmac it will get stuffy and hot...but once flying I freeze as they crank up the AC typically. DO NOT use the pillow or blankie they offer. NASTY Germs
Don't wear a 3/4 zip polar fleece. That guarantees a boob grope apparently.
I too wait to put jewelry/watch on until after security. And I'll then go and buy a sprite or ginger ale to take on board as I get a little airsick sometimes. |

Is there a way to opt out but not have to do a pat down? any liquids have to be small and fit into a ziplock bag.....and no nail files or nail scissors (they will take them away as well as lighters) nothing aresol............and 1:45 is plenty of time for a transfer...and as for the pat down or scan its one or the other(at least that how its been for us).......you choose........only once did i ever get neither and i was shocked, im the one that usually gets my luggage searched....last year they searched by bag (m & m's are dangerous as all get up apparently) and when they so called repacked they broke the bag of m& m's....i had them all over my suit case......but yet my so sailed past with a redmond salt rock..go figure

Don't check luggage. Use a carry-on--a medium size duffel bag or a rolling weekend bag are usually great options. You can carry a purse too and store under seat in front.
Wear socks and shoes BUT its a good idea to have stuff you can slip in and out of easily. If you have a set of slip on shoes, use these. This makes for faster trip through the lines; nothing you can do about random searches. They happen.
If I travel with electronics, phone, ipad, kindle, I put them in an outside pocket on my carry-on so they are very easy to put in the bins. They will make you do this.
Wear no jewelry or anything with metal, including coats with a zipper. Heck I won't even wear jeans through. I usually travel in some form of comfortable cotton pant with an elastic waist band. You can put the other in your travel bag. I bring a hoodie in case it gets cold.
Make sure you have all paperwork (passport or DL, boarding pass) out of your purse and in your hand as you approach the screening area. Makes everything faster. Get in for your first flight early so you can relax about getting through security.
Know that you DO NOT have to go through the screening process again as you move from flight to flight. 1.5 hours is plenty of time to grab a bite to eat, go to the restroom and make your gate. I usually find my gate first and then see what's close.
Whenever traveling, I focus primarily on simplicity in terms of liquids and stuff. I too buy the walmart travel packs. They work great. I focus on ways to pull my hair back and still look neat. Quickness and simplicity in packing and getting ready in the morning are key. I usually pack pants and shirts with a sleeve so I don't have to worry about shaving too (we're talking if you're only gone a day or two) since I won't want to pack a nail file or a razor. If necessary I buy a razor at a drugstore when I get there, but I haven't always had time for this. I also try to pack very little if any makeup. Make sure all liquids/makeup are in a single clear plastic bag. This makes it much easier for them to see and pass you through quickly.

What about my bra? They have under wire. Every one of them do. I would rather not have my bras pulled out of my bag infront of everyone because they set a alarm off. I would be so embarrassed lol. |

Location: South Georgia | One more thing...ATL is a very large airport with a train underneath the terminals. You will use the train to get from the one gate to the other at your layover. Since it is such a big airport, find your gate first before looking around, just to be sure you have plenty of time. Planes start boarding usually about 30-35 minutes before the flight time. So, keep that in mind. |
