I have a gelding that will set back when tied, so I'm thinking that spending some time tied up might do him some good. He's impossible to bathe because you have to hold him with one hand and do everything else with the other. I cannot get him to tie to a fence for a bath. I made him just prance around and deal with it today while at his tree.
He's in his own lot (if he gets himself free he's still contained) tied with a Blocker ring under a pine tree. He's pawing (but I haven't ever had him paw at the trailer) already and only been tied for about 30 minutes. How long should he be tied for his first time? He's been sprayed down with fly spray, so I know he's pawing more out of aggression/boredom. The shade will move in a couple of hours and I was planning on letting him go after that. Just wondering if I shouldn't make him go that long for his first time.
It has less to do with the amount of time, more to do with his attitude. You want the reward to come when he settles. So, as soon as he looks like he is in a calm state of mind, I would turn him loose then. If he sees you walking toward him and starts pawing again and acting up, turn and walk away until he settles down again.
Can you tie him above his head... Like on an over hanging tree branch. NOT short but comfortable... but where he can't put his head to his chest... I don't tie them where the head is higher than the withers (would be too uncomfortable). Mine quick pawing and learned to be patient.
