I have a mare whos hooves seem to be chipping and cracking in between trims. She is trimmed every 6 weeks and is on good quality hay and grain plus pasture. My other two horses have no cracking or chipping whatsoever. Her hooves are solid black but seem to be so brittle. Is there something you would recommend to try?
Her hooves are also more "pan" shaped and don't look like my other two horses. Any advice is appreciated.
I agree on rounding the edges, I have a few barefoot horses and I'm always reminding my buddy to round off the hooves as much as possible so that they dont chip up. They still do if I want to long in between trimings.
Maybe add some biotin to the diet? I have similar issues with my horse's feet and that's what I'm trying (he's also barefoot so we're working on that as well), but hoof growth takes months to get the new "tougher" stuff grown out.
