Location: Somewhere around here | My husbands horse got his tail chewed on by a colt about two years ago and it hasn't ever grown back. He's not with the tail chewer and hasn't for almost a year and a half now but his tail still hasn't grown any. I have tried hand coming through it so I won't break off any more hairs and then braiding it but that rarely lasts more than a day. I flat out refuse to buy a tail bag though. They always seem to get lost, completely destroyed, or worse lol.
Any suggestions? |

Location: London Ontario | Make sure he has a really good diet!!! it all starts from the inside. then I would say DONT brush it all that often, hand pick out any shavings, hay, burrs, etc. You can also try MTG on the dock, massage it in, it smells gross and is greasy but works!!! Good Luck!!! |

Location: Somewhere around here | Lol I have tried MTG before but oh man it makes everything smell like hot dogs! I think I was wondering if there was anything out there that you could make; like something with vinegar or garlic or some sort of spell from a witches brew lol. |

| Ive had amazing tail growth with feeding omega horseshine and I do bag mine with the kind that you braid in. My horse is the one that removes everybodys fly masks and halters blankets etc... and his tail wrap has stayed put once I got the braid in style. I also use a product called rose conditioner by superior. Pretty inexpensive and smells really good. I do wash it and condition it a few times a week.

Location: Western performance horse Hades | My family showed halter / pleasure horses years ago before fake tails were allowed. Tommy Manion told my Mom keep the tails wet and clean it they will grow. My calf horse came to me with his tail between his hocks and I wet it everyday and I got it to touch the ground within a year. Don't know the voodoo behind it but it works, and that horse didn't have a good mane or tail gene either. |

Make sure his daily vitamin and mineral requirements are being met.
Flax is great for producing healthy hair and hooves (Omega 3s)
Regarding brushing: some people say never brush, some people say brush every day.
The dock of the tail produces oils from the skin. That oil serves to protect the hair if you brush it down through the hair shafts. Personally, I have found my horses tails to be much healthier if I brush daily, then loose braid, to keep them from getting really tangled again. Then when you brush the next day, you're not ripping out snarls, which is obviously counter productive to a full tail!
I also use a moisturizing lotion for the tail, but I do NOT apply it to the dock (to prevent the possibility of the lotion making the skin itchy and having the horse rub the tail dock, also counter productive lol)
The moisturizer I have found to work the best is Luster's Pink Original Oil Moisturizing Lotion and you can get it at walmart. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pink-Original-Oil-Moisturizer-Hair-Lotion... Smear it in, brush through, braid. Next day, take out braid, brush, re-braid. I use the lotion every other day unless the hair feels particularly dry when I take out the braid, then I'll reapply daily. |

Location: MD | feed him something rich in biotin! My QH had a stringy kind of mane and I tried the MTG thing but it was too gross for me to do it like I'm supposed to. Did the biotin supplements and now he has a nice thick and pretty long mane! |

Be careful the the MTG, I had a horse that had an allergic reaction to it and LOST her mane... It seriously burnt it off, and burnt her neck too, it was horrible!!! I was using it on 3 or 4 other horses and none of them had an issue with it, but needless to say it was thrown in the trash! I don't want to use a product that I have to worry about whether the hair might grow or just fall out!

It's oil based, so if you apply it and then turn them out in the sun, the burning can be even worse because you've basically just slathered them in sun tan oil.
The oil itself can burn the skin even without sunlight - I tried it on my mare when she had scratches and I will never use it again. Blistered her skin so bad. There are better options out there, that don't smell like bacon grease haha! |

Agree. MTG smells like diesel and sulpher. Not only does it burn in the sun, it will burn if it gets wet. |

Location: Somewhere around here | Thank you all! I wouldn't mind putting him on a diet and give him a few vitamins or supplements to help him grow his tail out but he's always out in the pasture. Lol I might try the water idea just do see if it would do anything. |
