| Anyone have any stories about surgery to fuse hocks, alcohol injections, drilling and laser?
Any other suggestions to help with hocks other than surgery, when injections quit working ?

| I've read the lets talk about sore hocks, I want to know peoples experiences with these 3 things. I see you do the laser surgery, is it the laser that they go through the hock joints with? Who do you use and have your horses stayed sound years to follow? I know I'm battling sore hocks, there is no question, it's now making the decision of what to do next and I have all 3 of these options to decide from. |

They go in laparoscopic with a fluoroscopy laser and laser the hocks. I actually didn't know this till a few days ago, but my vet is the vet who developed the procedure.
Prior to that he did the surgical fusion by dremmel bit and did over 300 surgeries.
He said the recovery time was faster with the laser less pain and less post op complications.
For the laser fusions the first horse was done about 12 yrs ago he has been retired for 5 due to arthritis in the front end, I never did anything to the hocks.
The second horse was done about 6 yrs ago and after the initial surgery we injected his upper hocks twice to remove the inflammation trimethsinalone and HA and he hasn't been touched since
The third horse just got done 6 months ago, so I can't tell you his story, so far no maintenance with his hocks |

| If you don't mind sharing what did these procedures run? I have taken my mare to the best lameness vet in my area and paid a pretty penny for two rounds of alcohol injections and over a year later the horse is just as lame. I understand the alcohol injections are not really current practice anymore and the vet did say my mare had top 5 worse hocks he had ever seen so I wonder if there is any hope of finding a vet and having this work? |

Surely you mean Oklahoma State University, not OU? Vet school is at OSU and OU is in no way a or animal related. |

| I just picked my boy up from Dr Hague at Edmond, who is nationally recommended for laser fusion. It was $2100 out the door. Looks like 90 days of rehab, then back to normal work, barring complication. I'm stoked about this, I've heard tons of good things. |

Location: USA | This is all new to me too.... Can the laser be done on a horse with bone spurs or is it used for other reasons? |

My first horse had nasty bone spurs that were actually hooking the tendon when he turned, my vet lasered them off too after the procedure he went from the bottom of 1d to the top.
And I am not sure where the research was done in Oklahoma, as the vet who created the procedure is Canadian, but the research was completed where the vets go to school. |

Is Brent his first name? If so he is the co-author of the primary research, my vet taught him. |
