Conformation and disposition being roughly the same quality and neither yet being a proven producer would you choose a stud that has a better pedigree (an own son of an all time top barrel sire with a strong maternal line) that is a proven 3/4 D barrel horse or a proven performer with 1D winnings against tough competition with a really strong maternal line but kind of unknown sire, keeping resale in mind.

If the 1D sire is well known or is up and coming with the potential to do big things and become known, Id go with him. Proven potential is big to me and not the bloodlines. However, some people prefer the big name bloodlines, or at least proven lines, pretty much the majority of the field do. Its more of a personal preference. Are people breeding to the 1D stud and getting performers? Does stud fee reflect what his bloodline lacks? If so, does it leave room for a profit if the sire doesnt have strong lines and ends up producing not so fabulous performers? And same goes for the 3d/4d stud with proven bloodlines. Are his foals performing better than himself? Are his foals selling well enough to compensate for his stud fee?
Ill be interested to see what others say. This was a great question!

IF I was breeding a mare I would not be interested in a 3D/4D stallion. If I am buying a prospect I am not going to pay much for a prospect by the same stallion, especially for resale:)

For me to decide, I would have to know what lines. There are just certain lines that I know make good barrel horses and some that are a lot more work to get to run barrels, and some that I simply won't touch, period. And what I consider good, others might not....so hypothetically, I couldn't answer unless I had hypothetical lines. lol For an instance....would I rather breed to a Mr. Eye Opener/FWF stud or a Sixarun/Three ohs bred horse....I would definitely take the last one....even though I love anything with Flit Bar in it....
