Anyone paying attention to the insane amount if money it's going to take to make the NFR? It's crazy to see how many are over $100,000. The 15th hole would have been in the top 5 just a few years ago.

And there are still some big checks to be won!  It will be interesting to see how #10 to 20 move around.

I saw that.  Also interesting to see how many rodeos it's taken to make those funds....Fallon's been to 80-some and other have only been to 40-50.

Can't believe how much not having Duke has hurt Brittany this year. Think she'll run at the BFA instead?

Isn't there one rodeo left that pays around 30,000 to win it ?

I think it would be interesting to learn how many of the top 15 actually make much money after all the expenses for the entire year.  I bet a lot of them spend over $100K if you really considered all expenses.

If that's true, it's a heck of a way to make a living. Most of last year's top 15 made less than 50K at the NFR last year, and several earned in the $15-20K range. It's really a shame, in my opinion, for a popular American professional sport. I sure as heck wouldn't encourage my daughter to do it.
It sounds great to "chase the dream" or to be "living the dream" of making a run for the NFR, but the reality is something altogether different.

You have to think though.. It's not like any of these girls only rodeo. Maybe some of the young girls but most of them sell/train horses and some of these horses sell for more than the average income in this country. Look at Fallon, she has a huge business that she runs on top of making 80 rodeos in a year. I think they all find something to help provide.

Fred Whitfield does a great job explaining how much it costs to make the nfr in his book Gold Buckles Dont Lie. Its a great read. He also states that with the cost of living today its even tougher. For example the cost of a new truck today is at least 2 go round wins as opposed to 10 years ago when a new truck cost much less than today. To win a round had not changed much compared to the rising cost of living. That is one of the reasons the contestants were so upset with wrangler and las Vegas and the negotiations with prca late last year and earlier this year. Most contestants have other business ventures to help pay for their rodeo life. Many train horses and or sell them on the side as well as schools and clinics. They also compete in other events such as futurities and jackpots outside of prca wpra. The nfr is the best of the best and is glamorous. But I guarantee you the road getting there was not all glamour.
As for brittany I'm sure she has missed duke and the nfr this year but she has made some awesome young horses and won more than kaley bass who sits in 1st at this time.
I admire every one of them and the talented horses that got them there. What is most admirable is the grit to stick it out and come back after adversity as many of them have had this year. I can't wait for the first week of December!

I think there are a handful of rodeos with >$10K, including 2 more champions challenges. I would love to know how much they spend (the ones who go to a few and the ones who go to 80) in a month--in gas, entry fees, feed, farrier etc. It has to be unreal!

With the talk of the top girls having businesses on the side--I've seen questions before but not really a clear answer--do their sponsors actually pay them in cash? Product? Pay their entry fees? I'm sure all of them are possible--but what's the norm?

It's been said before--it's pretty cool to see some new names in the top 15 (and top 20!!) Exciting to watch the next few weeks!

I think the norm on sponsors is product and entry fees! That's what I see anyways.. The big names usually have the kind of sponsors that just product alone would take out a huge chunk of expenses.

I don't know if it's possible but I'm still rooting for Sara and Bling to make it. She was 22nd or 23rd last week but won one rodeo and got second at another this past weekend. She hasn't said about Pendalton yet.

Sarah is a very nice girl and I'd love to see her make it but she'd have to win $25,000 to get it done and that's with that 15th hole not really making anything. She will have to be fast and perfect from here on out to get it done. We were at Spanish Forks when she set a new arena record and that run was beautiful to watch. I don't doubt her and Bling have the ability. But it will be difficult to accomplish at this point in the season.

I think you have to consider how many rodeos each girl has entered. The fewer the rodeos the more earnings per run.

We were talking to Kelly Kaminiski about this.  The girls with 80 rodeos will have double the costs compared to for instance Lisa Lockhart.

You are exactly right. Another thing that you have to take into consideration, is how far are they traveling to win that money. If you aren't in the top 15 but have quite a bit of money won without a big rodeo count you are going to have a wider profit margin just because of fuel and days gone from home. You can make money with the right horse.

I don't think she really started hauling much out west to the bigger rodeos, till June or a little after. She has done tremendously well and still has shot to win Rookie of the year.

This is a "dream" for so many. Maybe because I am older, I think about all the hauling, the lame, sick horses, the broken down trucks, flats on the trailer, driving all night to run in a sloppy, muddy pen in slack. It would NOT be for me. That said, I admire those gals more than anything and I get a BIG lump in my throat watching them run at the finals. I have nothing but the upmost respect for all of them but working a regular job seems so much easier (and more secure for me). I guess I am too much of a worrier!

I would LOVE if Sarah & Bling made it. My friend Shannon bred, raised and Sold Bling to Sarah's family through the Fulton sale. My friend also bred, raised and sold Guys Six Pack of Fame - Christine Laughlin's awesome mount. It's going to be so awesome to see the Western 37 brand make an appearance at the T&M. Shannon has worked very hard to build a solid breeding program and quite a few shining stars have come from there.

Yes this is her first year as well as Blings. She ran some of the winter rodeos here in the southeast then headed back out after the Triple Crown Show in Perry Ga. Hindsight being what it is if she had went out and made a run at the July 4th rodeos no doubt she would have gave the top 15 a run for a spot.  She and Bling sure have shown they have what it takes to run with the big dogs of the WPRA.  So proud of them.
