Authorities in Tennessee say that a human skull discovered over the weekend in rural Decatur County was that of nursing student Holly Bobo, who disappeared in April 2011.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn told a news conference late Monday that Bobo's remains were found near her home in the town of Parsons, approximately 110 miles east of Memphis.

Two men discovered the skull Sunday, approximately 10 miles from property owned by the family of Zachary Adams, who has been charged in Bobo's kidnapping and murder. Authorities had previously searched the area this past March. Adams has pleaded not guilty, as has Jason Autry, who is also facing murder and kidnapping charges.

Bobo was 20 when she disappeared. Her brother told police that he saw a man dressed in camouflage leading her away into the woods. Investigators and volunteers scoured the woods and fields of the town of about 2,400 for clues, but her remains were not immediately found.

Gwyn has said the Bobo investigation has been the most expensive and exhaustive in TBI history, and it's not over yet.

Since Bobo disappeared, the small town of Parsons and surrounding areas in West Tennessee tried to support the family, putting up pink ribbons on lampposts, mailboxes and storefronts. Bobo was wearing a pink shirt and carrying a pink purse before she disappeared.

Recently elected District Attorney Matt Stowe said his office was preparing to seek a possible death penalty in the case. A decision is expected in coming weeks, after he consults with the Bobo family, he said.

"The evidence is voluminous," Stowe said. "We are going to make sure that everyone who played a part in the heinous crime that has attacked the peace and dignity of the state of Tennessee faces a consequence for that."

Stowe said the Bobo family would be issuing a statement Tuesday.

Before the news conference Monday, the Bobo family was trying to remain calm and let authorities do their job, said their attorney, Steve Farese.

"You can imagine the emotional roller-coaster that they've been on," Farese said.

Two brothers, Jeffrey Kurt Pearcy and Mark Pearcy, also face charges of tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact in the case.  Both men have said they are not guilty.

Farese told reporters Tuesday that Bobo's relatives now want privacy as the investigation continues.

"We believe we have the right to mourn privately as a family, and as a community," he said. "Now is a time for grieving. Please honor our request."

Decatur County Sheriff Keith Byrd said the case has rocked the community and vowed to hold accountable all those responsible for the young woman's death.

"They can run, but they can’t hide," Byrd told reporters. "We never thought it could happen here. It can; it did."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ugh, that's almost like a punch in the gut when you read it.  Good from the perspective that it will probably lead to the conviction of these guys but bad for the family in a way because it probably provides more details on her death than they really wanted.  I hate this for her and them.  I was hoping she would be found alive but knew it wasn't good that she had been missing for so long.

My heart aches so bad for the Bobo family.

From what I've read, that area was searched many times. I think the Holly's remains have been moved around some.. perhaps that's why only the skull was found.

That's awful! Prayers for the family. I don't know what this world is coming to. There is so much hatred and cruelty.

If I remember correctly, he initially thought the man was her boyfriend.

A timeline of the events on the morning of April 13, 2011 was compiled on the basis of witness statements and phone records.
  • 4:30 a.m. Holly awoke to study for a nursing exam she was scheduled to take at 8. Her father Dana said that he woke up shortly after Holly. She was studying quietly in her room while he got ready and her mother and brother slept. "A lot of mornings before I leave, I'll ask her if she needs any money to buy gas," Dana said. "It is about 5:30 I guess, when I usually leave to go to work, and I talked to her through the door. She said leave her some money, and I left the money on the bar at 5:30 or 25 until 6, and that was the last I talked to her."[4][5]
  • 7:00 a.m. Karen Bobo left for work. "By that point [Holly] had already gotten up, put her clothes on and was sitting at the dining room table. I fixed her lunch and stuck her breakfast in the microwave, and I left for school," she said. Shortly after Karen left, Holly spoke over the phone to fellow nursing student Hannah Reece. They also texted back and forth that morning.[4][5]
  • 7:30 a.m. Holly answered a call from her boyfriend, Drew Scott. Drew had been turkey hunting nearby on her grandmother's property. A relative spotted Drew and did not recognize him, prompting him to explain that he had permission. Drew then called Holly to tell her what happened. Holly was in her home at this point with her brother Clint, who was still asleep.[4][5]
  • 7:40 a.m. A neighbor to the Bobo residence heard a scream as he was leaving for work. He told his mother about the scream then left for work. Clint Bobo says he did not hear the scream.[5][6]
  • 7:45 a.m. The neighbor's mother calls Karen Bobo at work and spoke to the secretary, who relayed the message about the scream.[5]
  • 7:50 a.m. Clint was awakened by the family dogs barking. He looked outside and saw a man, who he believed at the time to be Holly's boyfriend, Drew, with her outside. "I slightly raised the blinds and looked out this window and saw Holly," Clint Bobo said. "It appeared to be Holly kneeling down and Drew. They looked like they were kneeled down, facing each other in the garage, and they were talking back and forth. Holly sounded very upset and heated. He was doing much of the talking, and she would answer back and things like that. I couldn't make out hardly any of the words. The only words I could make out from here were Holly saying, 'No, why?'" Clint said that he figured Holly and her boyfriend Drew were breaking up. Karen Bobo called home and spoke to Clint. "I said, 'Clint, that's not Drew. Get a gun and shoot him." Clint reportedly replied "You want me to shoot Drew?", still believing the man was Holly's boyfriend.[5][6]
  • 7:55 a.m. Karen Bobo calls 911. However, because she called from school, she reached the dispatcher for the wrong county. At home, Clint looked outside again and saw the man dressed in camouflage walking with Holly into the woods.[6] He tried to call his sister's cell phone as well as her boyfriend's cell, but neither picked up and the calls went to voicemail.[5]
  • 8:00 a.m. Karen Bobo calls her house again. Clint tells her what he saw and she instructs him to call 911. Clint gets a loaded pistol and walks outside. He spots a pool of blood near Holly's car, at which point he dials 911.[7][5]
