Ok just a question is this a common thing that a vet "specialist" would practice without any kind of insurance? I know doctors have to have insurance to practice medicine are vets not in that same category?? Any info would be appreciated thanks

It all depends in the state you live in. Florida, you have the choice to not have medical mal-practice. You have to post in plain view that you do not carry ins. and that your patients will agree to allow you to rectigy the "issue" or settle out of court. It is very common in FL. I have worked in multiple practives that did not carry medical malpractice.

IDK. you don't have to have it so theres a chance they just choose not to pay for it. I don't think vets get sued near as often as human doctors. I don't ever want to find out, LOL

Mal-practice insurance it is based on the amount the insurance is paying
Out yearly overall not just your claims. As far as practicing without it,
I'm not sure if it is legal or not but it would scare the begees out of me.
But with that said I've also been In practice since 1999 and never had a
Claim so I guess some could say why bother? I don't know. But I will
Say with insurance prices sky rocketing I have had several conversations
With my agent and my family about the fact that it's getting to be too
Expensive to practice. I've had to cut cost back In other areas like not
Keeping large volumes of meds on hand and a client having to wait for
Them to come In Instead of leaving the clinic with them just so I can afford
The monthly insurance payment!

I cant imagine not having it but I can only imagine how expensive it is! I have a friend who is a human doctor and their yearly policy cost them personally $40k a year!

Stupid...stupid...stupid not to have it. I have a friend who got into her vet's policy and he'd been practicing well over 30 years I believe and he had NEVER had a claim. It was an issue that arose because of something a vet-tech did not him....he wasn't even there when it happened. Bottom-line, if something happens and the vet doesn't have insurance then he could be personally liable for what happens at his or her practice regardless of any signs or any agreements someone signs to allowing them to rectify a situation before suing...somethings can't be rectified. If not a mal practice policy then I would at least think they would want an umbrella policy.

I would think having mal-practice insurance would be part of the financial plan for a vet clinic... such as setting up a retirement fund / plan, medical insurance and disability insurance (especially if you were large animal -- I have two vet friends who are very thankful to have had their disability insurance -- one was unable to practice after his accident). That it would just be part of the "business" of being in vet practice as any other business.
