Location: Wonderful Wyoming | How do you deal with multiple people interested-going to send payment?
For example I had one person very interested, but needed to sell her mare first. Then another that said she will take her but had to wait to send payment until the 17th. Just got a phone call 5 minutes ago and he is sending payment NOW. So I emailed the others (as none gave a phone number) and said she has sold pending cleared payment. I don't want to make anyone mad. One seemed really excited to get her, but on the other hand I have sold enough horses to know they aren't actually SOLD until payment is in hand.
Just hate to dissapoint people... |

| Make it clear to everyone that the horse isn't considered sold until you have their money in your hand. Then it's not your fault if they miss out and are disappointed. It is what it is. If they want her bad enough, they'll be the first to have their money for you. |

Location: Desert Land | I sell to whoever is ready to sign my contract and send payment (or at least deposit) first. Every time I was holding on or saying sale pending without some money down, I always lost out on a buyer. |

| Usually first come, first serve. The first payment we get means the horse is sold-pending we feel good about the sale and everything! |

Location: Montana | I would say it isn't sold until money is in hand...that is how it goes in our retail business. We also have learned to put a time frame on something, even if the person has left a deposit, because we have had deals go on for more than 2 months even with a deposit and we don't like holding the bag that long.
However, if someone lives 2 hours away or something like that, we will hold whatever they want until they arrive. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Thank you for the replies. She was an older mare with her filly on her side and bred back. Due to her age-late teens, and no longer having a stallion, we were really hoping to get her sold before we weaned so she could ship with her filly. My only other baby is also sold so I wouldn't have anything to keep with her all winter otherwise. I went from zero interest in them to 3 at once. I know how it feels to lose out on a sale (I always want lots of pics since we usually ship them) and sometimes they sell to someone that isn't such a pain in the butt lol.
I just told them all she is sold to whoever pays first, just hated to inform the others that a payment has actually been made, since the one was really looking forward to them. On the other hand it is nice to think she has found a home. |

Location: The end of the Earth, SE AR | Money - non-refundable deposit - must be in my hand AND the CONTRACT must be signed.
By money, I mean bank wire transfer or Walmart money gram where they give me cash. I do not wait on checks to clear.
Horse doesn't leave premises till I have full payment (same methods as with deposit).
Sounds like you did exactly the right thing. I have learned the hard way not to wait on anyone for any reason.

I've had buyers in the past tell me they want a horse, but have to sell theirs first...um ok, I have no idea how long that will take, so I'm not waiting around on that. People say they're for sure going to buy it, then change their mind, something comes up, whatever. I won't hold a horse without a deposit unless I know the person really well and trust them to keep their word. |

| Wired funds are good or,some type of now funds paypal. Of if you have a national bank maybe a deposit from a local to,them branch. Lots of,ways.

| I just bought a mare wired funds. But tranportation was a problem. She was gonna help me get across country. She had girl was suposed to,haul for,an amount she did not,even get her off the ladies property and tried to,jack me up for more momey and girl took her to her house and try to keep mare. I actually got another shipper involved that lady took her back and had to get another shipper got a nice one from uship he was a godsend. The lady who,i,bought her from made my shipper wait 48 hours to get her. I think what really happend was the owner found she could have gotton abput another 2k for the mare. Wqs hoping i would give up. |

OMG! That is totally crappy! I think I lucked out and the one woman that was interested is going to take her '13 filly. I'm running out of stuff to sell.  |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I went through this with my weanling this summer. I sold to the person who sent the first deposit though I had considerable interest from some people who wanted to watch her grow a bit more or who were trying to sell a horse to buy her. I was very happy with the deal I made and I'm confident she will have a good home though. We even worked out a payment plan.
All that said, I think it is very important to be up front with your buyer that the horse is still open to sale until money is received. If you don't say this, you in effect have a verbal contract with the first person who says they will buy it and they could sue you if you sale the horse out from under them. It's a rare thing but it can happen. |
