Location: midwest mama | My barrel horse gets fairly low in the turn, and when he comes out of the turn he launches forward pretty hard. I sit on him pretty good that first stride out, then the back of my saddle (cantle) pops me in the butt, launches me forward and then I get off balance. That makes me not be able to get him set up correctly for the next turn. Same thing happens to me on the second and third barrel.
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? I'm making myself crazy trying to get it figured out. Argh! |

| Really focus on looking and pushing to your next barrel. That helped me. |

| Do you have a back cinch that is snug? Might help? |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Welcome to my world! LOL Seriously, I've been there. Besides simply "getting up with them" I do think that a small saddle will do this. I think too many people have this idea that they should be wedged in their saddle. For me, when that happens, my saddle becomes a slingshot. I think my saddles have been at least a full inch too small. Now I am selling them...except for one. |

I totally agree. Saddle is too small. |

Location: midwest mama | The cantle of this saddle is pretty tall - 4 1/2 ". It's like the back of the seat pops me forward. Once it hits me hard and launches me forward I get so off balance that there is no way I can get my body back in position to drive him to or past the next barrel. :( |

I hate the taller cantles for this very reason plus if your saddle seat is too small it even makes it worse. |

You are exactly right.. If your saddle is too small or if the cantle is too high it will throw you forward when you try to sit down.. If your butt has no where to go behind you, so you can balance yourself, it will throw you forward and your feet behind you.. I ride in a lower cantle just for this reason.. |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | If you not in time with your horse it will throw you off balance every time. If you sit for the turn and wait for finishing your turn. You should be able to get in time with your horse. If you push hard enough against the horn it will keep you braced for the launch thus thrusting you forward the same time your coming off the barrel. |

Location: where ever my L/Q trl is parked | I agree with most -your saddle is too small for your hindie.... I see lots of girls that think they are a size 4 jeans and really are a 12/14 using a 13" saddle when they should be using a 14.5/15.5" seat. You know your saddle is too small when your hindie is hanging out 2" or more on either side of the cantle or when it pops you up and out around every barrel. (hand to forehead) If I'm not being politically correct sorry but ................... Geez get a grip and some realization here.... bite the bullet and buy a saddle seat that will keep the big in that pocket and improve your postition and balance 100%. |

Location: between here and there | Here's the more technical reason! lol Some very amusing and it amounts to the same thing, but few people take into account the thigh size or leg length. What actually happens is, in too small a seat, it tips your pelvis forward and even a tiny bit (1/4") can throw your body forward, leg behind. Now, your horse already is naturally 60% weight shoulder forward so it will also make it more difficult for him to collect. If you are long legged you need a little larger seat. I've seen some 5-8 gals that are very skinny riding in 13 or 14" seats that would do much better with a 15 because of the length of their legs. It's not always because of fluffy buns!! LOL |
