Proverbs 15:1-7 A SOFT answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. The eyes of the Lord ARE in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good. A wholesome tongue IS a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. A fool despises his father's instruction, but he who receives correction is prudent. In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but in the revenue of the wicked is trouble. The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, but the heart of the fool does not do so.
Our tongues are powerful little instruments like a rudder to a ship, able to change our direction and alter our course . Our tongues can steer us into shallow rocks of destruction or speak of the depths of God. Our tongues can be on fire and set blazes fueled by the wind of gossip. Words can break a heart and shatter a soul, or they can be used as a tool to build people up. Our tongues can be harsh, stirring up anger, or they can be soft, turning away wrath.
The use of our tongues is a reliable gauge to help us know our own hearts. The thoughts of the heart will eventually spill out of the mouth. God is looking on the heart. May your tongue be a tree of life producing sweet fruit in a world that is full of perverse, rotten words.
