I lost my Rat Terrier Pooh Bear last Thursday, September 18.  God blessed me with two wonderful Rat Terrorist....Chubby (lost him last November 13).  They were both 13 years old so I had them each for many years.  It has taken me this long to get myself together to post.  Pooh Bear was different from your usual because he was the most loving dog.  He hugged you every chance he got.  He loved to talk to my sister on the telephone, he knew when I talked to her, I guess he could her voice and knew it was her.  You had to put the telephone to his ear and he would push on the telephone and whine and lick.  And he knew when we turned down her road and he would "sing" until we got to her house.  Chubby on the other hand was always stoic and would just look on with disdain on his face wondering why he had to listen.
I had to have my truck in the shop Wednesday so I was without a vehicle.  I think he started having small strokes later in the day.  Having just recently moved I had chosen a veterinarian that was recommended to me.  We had visited him back earlier in the summer to meet him and set a base line for future appointments.  I failed to ask if he took emergency calls, my bad.  So when I knew I had an issue that night I tried to take care of Pooh Bear through the night until 7:00 that morning.  I called the clinic and talked to a gentleman and told him I thought Pooh was dying.  At which time he told me he could give me an appointment at 9:45.  I had an appointment myself at the hospital at 8:00 for a CT that my oncologist had set up.  I fixed the passenger side of my truck with softie blankets for Pooh and headed to the hospital.  I told them what was happening and they were so kind and mixed up my contrast and gave me directions on how to take it and told me to time it to suit my schedule and to take care of my dog and come in when I had everything taken care of and they would do the scan whenever.  Couldn't have asked for any sweeter people.  Pooh Bear died in my arms as I was carrying him in.  Receptionist was on phone and acted like I was such a bother and kept talking.  Finally she shouted for someone to come to the front and she doodled around a while before addressing me.  I told her I thought my dog was gone but wanted to make sure before I left him for cremation.  She was so put out and said that she would see if the vet could look at him.  So the vet begrudgingly came out of his office and listened to his heart and told me he was gone.  I asked if they did cremations and he answered yes.  I told him what had been happening and he said well he had no idea what had happened.  Took all of a minute I am sure.  I paid them and they said they would call me.  I bit my tongue and didn't say anymore.  When they called me I calmly walked in and asked for my Pooh Bear's ashes.  I then asked the lady if there might be any veterinarians in Huntsville that did take emergency calls.  And she probably not.  That this veterinarian didn't take emergencies after 8:00 because he had two children he wanted to spend time with.  I thanked her and walked out as there were other patients waiting.  I was not the person to say that to.  My first husband is a veterinarian and I can tell you he took every call no matter what time of the day or night it was.  And we raised two children too.  It wasn't easy but we just figured that was the profession he had chosen and taking care of his clients when they needed him was what you do.  This long rant is just to say if you move be sure when you choose a new veterinarian you might want to ask if he takes emergency calls.  I had no idea the world had changed so much that this was not an option.  I think if they don't take emergencies they should have it posted somewhere in the office.  If I hadn't have had the CT scheduled for myself I would have loaded up and headed to Gatesville in the night to where I know my vets would have seen me anytime day or night without an appointment.  I have spent many thousands of dollars on my animals when needed and would have spent what it took to make sure my babies were taken care of.
I apologize for the novel.  But if it helps anyone that has had to move then I feel like it was worth it.

I'm sorry you lost your baby, and that the whole vets office are a bunch of insensitive idiots.  What a crock they don't take late emergencies too. What would they think if their doctor couldn't look at their kid at 2am??

Many prayers for you. I am so sorry. Pooh Bear was loved. And he knew that up until the moment he left, wrapped in your arms. I am very sorry for your experience with the vet, etc. Some people need to choose a different profession. I wouldn't have been as nice as you.

I wouldn't have been as nice as you either. You are such a great person. Pooh knows you loved him and he had the best home and love with you.....all the way to the end. I will jump to a whole new level of crazy when my Fred's time comes.

Horrible vet clinic - you should send them a copy of your post.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your Pooh Bear was a lucky little guy to have someone who gave him such a wonderful life and was there for him in the end. Remember his good days and concentrate on all the joy he brought you.

On the vet's office, if it was me, I would probably find every web site that would allow me to post a review and post that story for everyone to read.

I hope your health is alright. I will keep you in my prayers.

Oh Linda so so sorry that you lost you little friend, just hurts so much, sending you a hug   . I was in the same boat as you on finding that good vet when we moved here in 04, all the ones that I was told to use were just so cold hearted. I do not use the ones here in town.
 Hugs to you

Im so sorry for your loss... and May Pooh Bear rest in heavenly peace... I have to believe he was at complete peace in your arms and while hard on you, he took your love with him.
Now... for that vet... GRRRR I dispise vets or dr's that are in their profession for money.  I mean I understand they need a break and all that but Emergencys come with the territory.  I would be sure and write a review where ever you can online pertaining to that vet, once you get Pooh Bear back (sorry if I missed where you did) and let everyone know just how they operate.

I recently moved too and just happened to find a great vet that gave me her cell even.  I know if she doesn't answer she will call as soon as she can.  So praying for you to find a great vet that cares...   (((HUGS))))

Oh srh.  i am so very saddened to read this.   I agree on the emergency calls.  Your post makes me so sad as I know what great care you take of your animals and how hard this is on you.  Shame on this vets office for acting like this.  Compassion is a large part of their job.  Just wrong
